Truck Bed - Bike Storage Suggestions

All,
I am seeking suggestions to accommodate 5 bikes in the rear of my Ford F150 truck bed. For those with a F150, Silverado, Tundra etc that don’t have the extended cargo bed, you have discovered that you can’t get a bike in without taking off the front wheel. Is there a way to get this accomplished without taking a wheel off or is the best option still a hitch platform rack.

As of now I have two adult bikes and three kid bikes but as they grow will be 5 full sized bikes so looking to do it right once

Thanks for any suggestions.

I’ve never seen a great truck bed rack that keeps the wheels on. Will a road bike fit if the tailgate is open? If it does, then you could do something like install roof rack trays (that hold the whole bike) into the actual bed of the truck. This may be a pain, however, as then you couldn’t use the truck bed for actual truck bed stuff. But if you got a short bed truck I doubt it’s a work truck.

I’d get a hitch rack that, for now, is a 2 bike rack, but is easily upgradeable to 4 bike (1up and Kuat are the two best options there) for when you need it. Put the smaller bikes that will presumably fit in the bed in the bed.

Is a tailgate pad out of the question? One good thing is that it actually leaves some space at the front of the bed for other stuff, while it accommodates five bikes easily (road or mountain). I have a 2013 Tundra Crew cab with the 5.5 foot bed and even there, I can leave the front 1/3 of my folding bed cover locked down so that anything I put there stays mostly out of the rain.

what about something like this, either prefab or DIY
(Strap everything down really good) and add a gate fence.

If I had a truck I would like the added security when removing the front wheel and bolting the front fork to the truck.

There are some decent plans out of the internet for PVC bike racks for truck beds, but I think most of them assume the bed is long enough for a bike. Maybe you could build one and figure out a way to secure the bikes in the rack and leave the tailgate down when you’re using it.

I used this basic design to make my garage bike rack.

Yeah, sounds like you want one of these from the description…

i bolt those front fork clamp tings to boards and load three to fove bikes in my truck. the real issue that limits is the areo bars are too low and hit the bed rails. but those clamp things are cheap

I wonder if anyone has created a rack of sorts that elevates the front wheel … creating a large enough angle that the bikes would fit. Picture them going slightly vertical.

Thoughts on how to build or buy this anyone?

I use the tailgate pad, fantastic, I have never used my towbar mounted carrier since I got the pad.
