I haven’t really kept up with The Real Starky shenanigans over the past year or so but went on his blog this morning because there is an audio interview of Ironman Wisconsin winner Gerlach.
I was surprised to see it said to see bonus content click on to become a “patreon.”
Is this how he makes his money by charging for his interviews and pretending he is a radio personality?
The podcast with the first part of the Gerlach interview is available for free. The bonus content available to paying listeners is some non-tri related stuff. This is the case almost every week.

What do you have against free enterprise and a person trying to earn a living?

Everything should be free god dammit. I should be blessed with the right to hear the whole interview instead of giving up one venti coffee for the month.
95% of the content is free to use as a consumer/listener. Instead of just begging for money and donations to make the time commitment (and it is a big commitment) worthwhile in addition to funding other parts of the site/trips to Kona/Texas etc., TRS is offering some bonus materials and content for $1.
I have nothing against free enterprise. I was just expressing my surprise. And you are correct I don’t usually listen to podcasts. I now consider myself educated on this matter. Thanks.
Oh, and I didn’t click on for the free content but didn’t know it was just a dollar. Not that it would have made any difference. Just seems like a hassle. BTW even Thomas expressed surprise regarding the “bonus content.”
If you are going to troll someone you should be better informed on how podcasts work at least.
Yes. As I said, I have been educated.
You know, I had, what I thought a valid post. The only one who is truly, “trolling” is someone that comes on here with nothing to add of value and posts simply to name call. You must have gotten lost and meant to hit, LetsRun?
Indeed, it is different. It’s called “bonus content” and is available to patreons in addition to the free stuff which is not “hidden” and is available to all. What don’t you get?
Every podcast I listen to uses Patreon for support and provides bonus content for Patreon subscribers. Every single one and I listen to about 15-20.
Interesting. You’re comment got me curious about my podcasts. I looked at my feed and I listen 30 podcasts with a wide range of topics (sports, news, nutrition, comedy, story telling, money, general interests, etc.). While some of them have some type of support system only three link the support system to additional or bonus content:
The Real Starky
Slate Politcal Gabfest
Never Not Funny

You have weird collection then, because the majority do not do this. Go to the top 20 podcasts on itunes, I do not think any of them do this.
Adam Carolla, número uno. He has a show called Take a Knee as part of his network that’s available to donors. Most of what I listen to is Star Wars related.

Nothing…I “get it” just fine. Call it “hidden” or “bonus content” or whatever you want…you are quibbling over semantics.
My point was that NONE of the podcasts I listen to (as opposed to “every single one” as claimed by others) have bonus / premium / hidden content for patrons, although some (but not most) solicit support from patrons. (although one even shamelessly hit listeners up to buy a bike for his kid…I stopped listening after that.)
