I have both in a front clincher and I weighed them on a gram scale and they were the same weight. Just wondering…didn’t HED say they lightened up the wheel with lighter carbon or something? I gotta get rid of one of those wheels eventually, I guess it doesn’t really matter which one?
HED bought the specialized molds, I see no reason why they should weight any different. Never seen anything printed about changing the carbon weave.
From HEDs website
the H3 clincher
Front: 830g
Rear: 1020g
I weighed my stock TTR3 40mm aluminum rear wheel (without skewer, cassette, but with rim tape), and it came out at about 1070g.
what did your wheels come in at?
A few years ago, they introduced the H3c clincher. - With a carbon braking surface instead of an aluminum track.
HED: “…the shape is unchanged from our standard H3 wheel, but for the all carbon model we have replaced the aluminium rim with carbon. The result? 170g less rotating mass”
I’m not sure it is still available though.
Without tire, tube, and rim tape, computer magnet, or stickers, both front wheels came out at around 845g each (give or take a gram). Only weighed the front wheels. I have a clincher and tubular rear so didn’t really compare those.
Not a big deal, I thought I read it somewhere, or perhaps a salesman in a bike shop said it once that they used either a different modulus carbon or something to make it lighter.

that’s not too heavy. A Zipp 404FC is 774g (claimed)… and a lot more expensive.
The very first Specialized trispokes were heavy - after a year or two they made it quite a bit lighter. Didn’t know there was a clincher before HED took over the design. Apart from the full carbon versions, I thought there had been some minor evolutionary improvements by HED in the hub area, knocking off some grammes, maybe this is the freehub only. My guess is that the HED one will sell for more unless someone really wants a retro match.
I had an original tri-spoke from Specialized and still ride a front from '93 and a rear from '96ish. There are some visual differences at the hub but when I compared it with a friends front H3 clincher, I would have needed a scale to determine if there is a difference.
As mentioned, HED bought the molds. Over time they have improved the carbon layup and shaved ~100g off the wheel, but other than that (and some hub updates) it’s the same wheel (just as aero).
