Triple STI shifter on double setup?

Has anyone here ever used a triple front STI shifter on a double crank. I was thinking of playing with my P2K and setting it up much more shallow and with drop handlebars. I have everything I need except for the front shifter. The only one I have sitting around is a triple. How much difference is there in the amount of cable pulled / distance between chainrings? Since I am just going stop to stop on the derailleur could I just use one stop on the shifter or would I need to use both to get the full derailleur travel?

As long as the gear are spaced the same , just limit your travel with the stop screw. I have done it with the campy ergo stuff.

The Ultegra shifter is compatible with either double or triple. Does that help?

Thanks for the info. I will try it this weekend if I get teh time.

I have a triple STI on my double - it came that way from the dealer - and I have always had problems shifting - no matter how many wrenches I have had look at it. The good news is that the trouble is usually shifting up to the bigger gear and not down to the smaller. Sometimes I have to shift twice to get it to move up. Other times I have to shift it up then back down then up again. Pain in the arse!!

I’m running Dura-Ace triple STI levers (eBay) with a double on my road bike. I discovered the trick is that the small-middle chainring shift is not the same distance as the middle-large chainring shift. The middle-large is the one you need if you’re running a double. So when you adjust the cable you need to have the shifter already ‘shifted’ to the middle ring (setting, whatever); then tighten the cable down and it should work. It took me some trial and error to get this to work, but it’s flawless now. Saved a bunch on the STI levers too.

I’m confused, I thought the STI shifters (levers) were double or triple compatible, or are you guys talking about the derailluers?

“I’m confused, I thought the STI shifters (levers) were double or triple compatible”

Some are, some aren’t. Ultegra swings either way but Dura Ace is either double/triple specific. Not sure about 105 or the Campy line.
