No I wasn’t there. But it was in the high 30s the previous night, with really high winds. I was kind of surprised they were swimming outside so early in the season. A few towns north, the other race director had a sprint tri with a pool swim.
We raced it last year with similar winds and the buoys got pulled all over the place. I was told they had issues again with the buoys. Not sure why this happened two years in a row. Cinder blocks are not that expensive. But as an RD myself, I learned something from this. Keep the motor boats away from the swimmers. Let the lifeguards and kaykers do their thing. This was a low -to- the- water fire rescue boat and from what I was told, a bunch of panicked swimmers tried to climb overboard swamping, then flipping it. The boat should never have been near the swimmers in the first place.
I didn’t race this race but I live about 5 minutes from the park. I went on a longer ride at about the same time the race began yesterday and I can not believe they were in the water.
It was sooooo windy here yesterday. Last year they shortened the swim course because it was so choppy in the water. The swimmers had to stand on the beach for an extra hour before they began. The race organizers do put on good events but I think they need to change something up with this race. Seems like a lot of chaos, just to be the first outdoor race of the season around here.
– Lucky no-one drowned
– The kayaks also got capsized
– Race should have probably been canceled, postponed until conditions improved, or had the swim at least canceled.
so were the people who sank the boat dq’ed and did anyone get checked for their green card after. Little Elion…Elion are you on the raft ?
They didn’t have green cards but I bet they were wearing green and purple kits. Maybe TNT needs to hit up Desoto for a discount on a bunch of those Water Rovers.
I raced this one on Sunday in a relay. Yes, I had the swim leg. I got to go off with the first wave and I didn’t think conditions were that bad. They did lose one of the buoys before the race started so the modified course was a little short. The water temp wasn’t bad (I think about 60 degrees) but the wind was really strong and steady. I am a MOP but I believe the first place swim time was around 6 minutes. If you could breathe bilaterally it helped a lot. Turning away from the chop made it a more pleasant experience:)
