I finally figured out where I am doing my PhD work…Penn State…They have a tri club I hear but they don’t meet in the summer… Would like to get in touch with anyone that trains in the area especially for biking…I am training for Olympic and 70.3’s.
Can anybody that lives in that area tell me about the training atmosphere, clubs, etc?
Yeah, I went there for undergrad and was on the tri team for a few years. I spent a summer there and usually there are a few folks from the team around. Also, master’s swimming still goes on during the summer, and that’s a pretty good group. There are a couple of groups that ride and are tri-friendly, I think I usually did a couple of weekday rides and a long (sometimes epic) weekend ride with them. You can get more info at http://www.centralpennracing.org/. As far as running is concerned, I was usually on my own during the summer or met up with friends, but I would highly recommend taking 322 south a few miles to Rothrock State Forest for some great hilly long runs on the fire roads (great on a cross bike too). Finally, I would highly recommend talking to Erik Scott at the Bicycle Shop, or Sparky at Freeze Thaw, two great guys that have been in the area and really support the tri club and multisport scene in general - I’m sure you’ll meet them before long anyway.
Well, I hope you have a great time at PSU. Summer is probably my favorite time there, especially if you have air conditioning. Not as busy as during the school year, although certainly not quiet, and everything is GREEN.
Thanks for replying! That was some helpful information…Oh…its funny you said that…I move in on August 18th and don’t have a fu**ing air condition and am still paying 600 a month. It was either take that place or take a place where I would have an air condition and have to pay for the heat separately…So I took the one without AC. They are saying I will have to buy a window unit and I should be okay??
But both of those two choices were within 1 mile of the building I will be doing my slavery in!! So I am happy for that. I chose one on 127 East Hamilton Ave. if you know where that is??
As for the advice…I will definitely talk to those people and get in touch with the cycling club. I have heard mixed reviews about the tri club…but I have heard there are some monstrous cyclers in that area. Anyhow, I will be a strong supporter in the tri club. The problem with all these tri clubs is there are no badass women in them if you know what i mean. I plan on having an impact on their team. Thanks again for the routes, etc.
