Tri Training in Charleston, SC?

Hey everyone from Chucktown! I recently relocated to the area for work and am looking for some advice and training partners/groups. Are there any tri groups that meet up in the Daniel Island or Mount Pleasant area? Are you looking for someone to train with consistently? Ideally I’m looking for someone, or some group, training for a Half IM (sub 5hr finish times) or Full IM (sub 11hr finish times).

I live on Daniel Island which doesn’t seem to be very convenient for training rides. Where are some good areas to ride near DI? Is there anywhere somewhat “bike friendly”? Any group run or swims near by? Any training I can get in with a partner or group is ideal, especially on the long days!

I really appreciate any help or guidance you can pass along! Thanks!

This might be the best place to start if you are on DI

They have some of the main routes that people ride on your side of town. There are some good routes that go into Awendaw and the national forest and across the Wando river. There are a good many triathletes in the area that do half and full distance IMs. I am spending more time just on the bike now but i think you will find good company in Mount Pleasant

Thanks for the info! How tri-bike friendly are the group rides? I know some cycling groups don’t take to well to someone showing up with a tri bike.

There is so much good riding from where you are! As for groups I am less certain . . . I know there is a larger cycling group that meets at the trek store (you have already been given the link to that). It can get pretty fast and the roadies do sprint signs and what not but you will quickly realize the group is composed of mostly triathletes. You can very easily get over 100 miles of flat and fast riding without much traffic right from DI. Take Clements Ferry towards the Francis Marion. It will be about 10 miles before you hit Cainhoy Rd. Cainhoy Rd is 12 miles long. Follow it until it dead ends. Can can go left to Steed Creek or Right and get on Untied. Either Road is about 8-10 miles long . . . Once you learn the roads a little bit the opportunities are endless for long rides. These roads connect to the Charleston 1/2 ironman course. There are also a couple of group rides that meet on James and Johns Island but they might be farther to travel than you are looking for.

The run club has track night Tuesday nights. Lots of fun and a great place to network. I recommend getting in touch with David Quick. He writes for the Post and Courier and covers the endurance community. He will have a good idea of where to direct you (just do a search for him)

There is a decent masters swim group that swims at the pool on Egypt Road in Mount Pleasant. I also recommend signing up for the Low Country Splash (2.4 or 5 mile swim in the Cooper River). It is fun, a great opportunity to do a supported swim, and you will meet a lot of local athletes.

If you need any more recommendations I am happy to help!

On group rides I’ve seen an occasional tri bike and it seems okay. I wouldn’t be too worried

My fiancé lives on Daniel Island and rides from there regularly. He is a pretty good training partner (former college swimmer) and is familiar with most of the places to swim/bike/run near DI and the surrounding area. Send me a PM and I can put you in contact with him if you’d like.

This is some great advice! I really appreciate it! I’m planning on doing the group ride from Trek this weekend, and swinging by the track run next week. I’m looking forward to trying out the Charleston half course soon too. If I think of any specific questions I’ll definitely reach out. Cheers!

Maybe I should have posted when I move here, I’ve had zero luck finding people.

I moved here in November and got into the swing of things pretty quickly… I live in North Charleston, but do my weekend rides from the Trek Store in Mt. P.

Shoot me a DM and we can meet up to ride if you’d like.

Dave

Shouldn’t you be going white coat things instead of posting on ST?

(ps: come hang out)
