So this is the first I’ve heard that a tri suit can’t be unzipped during a race? Why?
You’re going to have to be more specific (race, governing body). Its not an USAT rule. But a race director can add pretty much any rule on top of USAT rules they wish.
It’s the dumbest fucking rule.
In any race that has this rule - why? Not an advantage, not nudity if wearing sports bra underneath, doesn’t make any sense.
I’m thinking Augusta allows you to unzip your top, but not below the sternum. They still haven’t released the 2018 athlete guide so it may have changed.
ITU and WTC Rule only, not USAT - rules states zip can only be unzipped to bottom of sternum. But if rezipped upon request then no penalty.
Hope this helps

We first heard about this rule at IMWI '17 briefing about a month ahead of the race at a local event but then you won’t find the rule in place at the '17 WC in Kona. We’ve also been told it depends on the race director. I don’t get it, can’t go below the breastbone but you can run in a speedo (Reedy) and race in your one piece swim suit (Holly Lawrence). People run shirtless and in sports bras in every city of the world…

The rule change was announced in February 2017.

The rule is in place at every Ironman 70.3 and 140.6. It’s like any other rule out there, you only get penalized if a ref sees you.
That said, I think the sternum rule is silly. But I do like the rule that you have to wear a top during the race.

Take a look at the published athlete guide for Kona 2017, the is no mention of the rule. Then watch the coverage and you’ll see sports bras and no penalties.

To me the rule that would make the most sense is “no nipples for bike and the run”
It’s easy to understand and there’s not much grey area for both sexes. Go nuts and enforce.

Not totally true but that’s not the point. WTC has to sell their races to the cities they want to put on races in. Most cities don’t want a bunch of half naked sweaty athletes running around their town on the weekend. WTC putting in this rule allows for them to make a better case for the city allowing them to put a race on there.
As much as most people here don’t care about people running shirtless their neighborhood, there are people that do and it only takes a few pissed off people to throw a wrench in having the race in their city for multiple years.
I have looked at all of the posted rules, and I don’t see anything covering WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS!
Seriously, what is the actual rule if your shorts, or top tears, or a zipper breaks? (I have seen people who have gone down on their bikes continuing with exposed, and bloodied skin many times) I think that is the actual point of the Ryf situation. Jesse Thomas duct taped himself, but did he actually need to?
As it does not appear to be stated anywhere, it apparently would fall in the murky area of RD discretion, which is generally not a great thing.

Personally, I don’t put a lot weight into the athlete guides. They are good guidelines but not the end all, be all. They are often copy and pasted from the year prior and they contradict themselves a lot. The athlete guide will say one thing and then during the race briefing, they tell you something different.
With the rule change starting last year, I’m not surprised it wasn’t in the kona athlete guide as it was probably a copy and paste of the guide from the year before. At race briefing in kona, did they say the rule didn’t apply? If they said that, then I’d really be shocked.
It’s my understanding that sports bra’s are fine even with this rule.
True - I guess if a race is in a country with more modest social norms they need to have some sore of rules and those should apply to men and women equally. Maybe Saudi Arabia will host a race if everyone wears long legs and sleeves. Hopefully no arrests for wardrobe malfunctions.
This rule has fascinated me ever since I heard it at athlete briefings last year. (Twice: Madison WI 70.3 and Steelhead 70.3) It still does not make sense that Ryf can win win worlds in a sports bra, yet IM was pushing this rule hard last year.
I get reasons why they would have the rule. What I don’t get is the wishy-washy enforcement.
Well you can win if it breaks…
Why did no one run over to her with safety pins and fix things up?
Outside assistance, big no-no. The question is what is the bigger no-no of the potential 2 infringements?
