I am looking to purchase a Tri -Specific set of shorts and top… Wondering if the combo is best or if buying thw two seperate is best… and also wandering what people think is the best make for these…I do live in the Phoenix area so the heat here needs to be kept in mind…
The new Orca stuff is killer. The Sugoi Technifine fabric tri shorts are also super nice, very good moisture transfer and an adequate pad but not too much to run in.
Louis Garneau is good but I am not a fan of the “waffle weave” fabric they use.
As far as skin suit vs. top + shorts, I’m a top + shorts fan for the simple reason that if I need porta potty access during an Ironman, it will be a less time consuming event. For short course racing, the skin suits work great though. For tops, I would recommend a top with a half zipper so that you can unzip and cool off if needed. I just picked up some great new stuff from Louis Garneau and plan to race in it in New Zealand. Their stuff is high quality, looks great and they have every combination of tops/shorts/skins that you need.
I’m a new fan of the Desoto tri shorts. Wearing them is akin to being held together by an energy weave. I’ve only worn them inside for spinning and treadmilling and I think they’re perfect. Oh yeah, thankfully they don’t have those rubber gripper-leg things (which are just plain wrong on the Zoot shorts). Sugoi shorts are also marvelous for the same reasons as the Desotos. I’m an LG racetop wearer. Gimme more waffle weave in black!
Sonic Youth’s WASHING MACHINE was the most underrated album of the 90’s.
Why would a male not simply wear tri-shorts and be done with it? Bare skin is just as aero as a top, if not more. I have still yet to figure out the point of a male triathlete wearing a top at all. Is it for sun protection or am I just missing something?
I have two Desoto skin suits that I like. But as mentioned not porta-potty friendly.
The original trishorts(XL’s) I bought when I started out had seams running up the inside of the legs that chafed and tended to bunch up on long rides. They needed the rubber stay put strips on the legs. Look wear the seams are when trying on trishorts.
The mediums(Desoto’s) I’m wearing these days are great, a bit longer inseam & power wonder fabric.
Having had pre-cancerous moles removed before I started doing triathlons, I try to minamize sun exposure.

When buying a skinsuit you might consider if Mr Wiggly and friends will be held in place or allow you to sit on them which is my problem with skinsuits. One answer would be a speedo or jocky but that would get away from the idea of a skinsuit. I favor the 2 piece.
(btw I’m not concerned with males wearing tops it’s the other folks I’m looking for with only bottoms on)
In all seriousness, what is the point of a male wearing a top?
many races / municipalities require that men and women wear tops.
Some men may feel uncomfortable not wearing a top (vanity reasons). Last year I would have been uncomfortable even running a training run without a shirt. The shirt helps hide the stomach. This year, hopefully, that should be different.
deetsay00: Right now I wear Desoto tri shorts and a Desoto aero top, very comfortable and well priced

Tom,
When u refer to the Orca stuff, which line are you talking about? Elite or just plain ol Race models. I’ve been thinking of going to a 1 piece. Any suggestions…? I like the Orca stuff but at $140+ for the Elite Tri-suit, it gets kinda pricey.
