Tri-Frame for Road Bike Configuration

Okay, so for years I’ve heard debate on this forum about people converting their road bikes to “tri-bikes”. What about the converse? Several months ago I raced a crit with an ITU guy that had an elite tri-bike with steep geometry set up as a road bike with drops and all. He was a total stud during the race. He thought he rode more powerfully with steeper geometry. Make sense? I’ve only started thinking about this more recently as I keep lowering my road set-up. For example, could you take the new Orbea Ordu TT frame with 74-76 degree geometry and set this up reasonably for a road configuration? I spoke with an Orbea rep and he thought about it for some time, then said why not. Or, is this just plain stupid!

Why would an ITU guy have a steep bike if he was not allowed to use it in competition?

Makes not a lot of sense IMO. I know a guy who set up his P2K as a road bike but I always wondered why he just didn’t buy a Soloist. Another guy used to group ride on a QR Kilo with road bars, a stack of spacers, 650 wheels and the seat slammed back as far as possible.

It’s quite doable, just not optimal.

You could do it but why??? you would have to put lots of spacers in and then probably even add a raised stem…now you’ve completely messed up the weight distribution on the bike…your knees would be way to close to your elbows now so you would push the seat back and perhaps even install a set back post…now all that up-right pedal power that potentialy exists is gone to…

To each there own but why not just by a good used frame or perhaps a nice lower line frame with the proper angles= more comfortable riding position and better road manors …just my 2cents…

I had a Specialized Allez Epic years ago. 74 degree seat tube angle. Road bike. One of the things you’d run into though is that if you put the seat way back on a tri bike, the rear wheel is very much under you, which plays hell on handling going up steep hills.

who says you can’t use a steep bike in ITU competition. the benefit would be running quicker off the bike. When you are set up steep though, using the drops becomes somewhat useless as you can’t get at them properly. The most useful position is the hoods, analagous to riding on the cowhorns on a TT bike.

Good points guys. Thanks. I’m lusting after that Ordu frame, but given that I just cracked my Ti road bike, I need to replace that frame first.

Dev, you’re an Idiot. No… wait… CRAP, I’m an idiot.

Misread the rule :frowning:

No more posting for me…
