Tri-Bike Dilemma---like a math problem

Here’s the formula:

  • Doing IMLP in July '06 (and no it’s not my first tri…)

  • Want to purchase triathlon specific bicycle.

  • Maximum budget for all components is US$1500.00

  • While I would love to buy a P3, etc. etc. with three kids and one wife that’s not a financial possibility.

  • Size - I’m 6’2 and 284 lbs. with a long torso…

  • My hope is to have this purchase become the ‘trusty steed’ that I can upgrade over time, but must meet my needs now.

What would you do?

If you want new – Felt S25 fits the bill – should be right about your price range and nice components.

Used – search ebay. Everything you could want is there, just stick to the budget.

Correct me if I’m wrong (and I know you will), but Specialized seems to be a good bike for those athletes with longer torsos. Their Transition Elite comes in at 1500.00. It’s worth a look.

Hey,

thanks for the feedback

What do you currently ride? Lake Placid is a hilly course and you may be better off on your current bike. Also, because of the hilliness of the course dropping some weight would do you a lot more help than upgrading to a tri-specific bike.

Currently ride a nice Titanium Airborne Zeppelin. I did a hilly 1/2 last year (SBR Multisport Harriman 1/2 IM in Harriman State Park, NY - 6000 feet of climbing on the bike loop) and liked the ride, but I’m considering going tri specific as I’ll be doing the NYC Tri (unless the water conditions cause me to burst into flames) as well as other events.

The weight loss is a good point. I’m down from 265 and really enjoy the weight/strength benefits but don’t know if I want to go much lower as the family is starting to scream about ‘being so thin’ plus with my long torso it doesn’t sit too well on me.

I appreciate your help!!
