I’m currently maxed out with reach and bar angle using the existing cockpit on the new-gen SLR 7, (I’m 195cm riding an XL frame). To be honest, I’m not sure if I actually need more reach, but being at the upper limit leaves no room for experimentation and position tweaking.
Is it required to go to a full aftermarket setup like FastTT or others to achieve more than the 15 degrees of bar anngle and get more reach? Or are there other options for custom adapters/plates that can be fitted within the existing cockpit?
Those are the mid toppers you have. You can get far toppers (the bit with the sticker on). Although note they are sold individually and not exactly cheap. But just check that you’ve not got another set of screw holes you could use - you may be on the back ones but looking at that I’m not sure.
Doesn’t change the angle above 14 degrees though. There are some aftermarket wedges that would allow you to retain the stock bars if you wanted.
But does go to show that height isn’t a great determinant of fit. I’m 191 on a large with the mid toppers and the bars set in the middle of adjustment.
I would disagree.
2nd pic clearly shows you have still room to slide the bridge further forward on the tower toppers.
(Take off the plastic covers on top, loosen the 4 bolts, and it should move).
If that doesn’t give you the desired reach, do as @Duncan74 said, and get the “far toppers”. They will offer even more reach.
This is the far topper on my bike:
(I could still push the bridge further forward about 1”)
Wow! Thanks to everyone for the replies here, this is fantastic news, looks like I have way more options than I was aware of. I had just looked at the pad placement and extensions, totally missed that the entire system could slide and/or mount to longer toppers.
In terms of stacking wedges, I believe my current setup is 14-15 degrees, I.e I could stack a 7 on top of that to get to 21-22 without issue? Trek “officially” said 15 was max, so I’m guessing the company line and what’s actually possible might be different here?
Yes, two 7° spacers stacked work no problem.
Just make sure to use long enough bolts.
(Ideally remove original bolts, measure them, and add whatever spacer you put on in length.)
Sliding the bridge forward gained me at least another inch plus. This also allowed me to bump the pads narrower to the point where I don’t think they could go closer and still fit the BTA. The plan now is to order the longer toppers and 7 degree spacers to see how it feels with even more reach (I’m hopeful it will be even better than it is now).
When ordering, note that you need to order each piece separately, and also each bolt. They don’t come as pairs, sets or with the bolts. The part no. is for one ‘thing’.
Also, with your aero bottle, looks like you’ve not trimmed the ‘straw’ yet. Either that or it’s pulled out and so only getting the top bit of the water. Sure you are onto that, but I found it was ‘kinking’ inside the bottle and then stopping the liquid passing through if it wasn’t so long it was flapping around annoyingly.
Front page article on Marquardt’s setup seems to show three 7deg spacers stacked up. I think you would have to drill out the clearance holes a bit on the top one.
