Hi, i managed to score a NIB 1998 Trek 2300 on fleabay. Does anybody know the seatpost binder bolt size? Do you have an extra to sell?
thanks
bb
Just take the seat tube collar to lowes, hd, or some other hardware store, they should have Allen wrench type bolts that will fit.
Thanks, but it does not have a collar. The clamp is part of the seat tube lug. Oldschool. There are binder bolts for this but the smallest ‘standard’ size is 19mm x 8mm and it’s too big. is there something about 15mm x 5 or 6mm?
thanks
By standard I imagine you mean bolts purpose built as a clamp bolt? This is where you’ll just have to get a stainless steel hardware bolt, just a good and you’ll find metric sizes at 5-6 mm diameter and with correct thread spacing, the length is easily solvable with a hacksaw or a threaded bolt cutter tool. It may just be a matter of trial and error unless you want to take the frame in, which I would do.
try M6x25mm…or longer and cut it down as already suggested…just thread an M6 nut on there first so you can clean up the threads a little by taking it off afterwards. should be able to find one in the hardware aisle bolt drawers.
Carl, thanks for the help. i don’t think a nut and bolt will work. both ends are inset so i can’t hold the end from spining. possibly a lock washer would keep it from turning?
i think it’s intended to have a binder bolt where the threads go into the female side and the head on that side has a tab wich keeps it from spining. but the only one’s i’ve found are 8mm. nothing at home depot or ace hardware.
any thoughts?
thanks
Carl may know but pics would be helpful, I’m still struggling to visualize exactly what this is looking like.
Diameter of the barrel of the bolt should be 5mm (maybe 6), head is 10mm
i’m not sure of length (inside to inside of head) but looks like less than 15mm
both heads are recessed into the lug so a nut/bolt will not work, must be binder bolt with threaded male going into the female end and either 1) each side has opening for a hex wrench or 2) one side has opening for hex the other side has a ‘key’ or is corrogated to prefevent turning when the other side is tightened.
thanks

Ok, I fully get it now. I would first make sure of the dimensions. Something like this may work, you may just grind down the flange edges if they are too wide. I would also suggest recessed nuts, they have them at the hardware store, you may have to go to a larger store for better selection. If those come in the diameter you need, just cut it down the length if necessary and use a bolt with a washer on the other side and you’re good to go. Yet another way would be to get a sleeve nut, put it in the middle and then use 2 bolts on either side with washers. If you know the exact diameter you’re looking for, you may be able to find it with some searching on the internet, but I lack patience and would just use some recessed or sleeve nuts from HD to make it happen.
Ah yes…realized what you meant as soon as I walked into the office this morning…right past a display case with an original bonded 1000 (similar binder concept).
Not having any luck sourcing one in my usual go-to places, nor in the dealer ordering system. Possible workaround: a short brake mounting nut (typically on a rear brake) and an M6 bolt of appropriate length. Key thing to check is that the brake nut flange (and bolt head for that matter) is large enough to fully engage the corresponding surface(s) in the clamp boss’ counterbore.
