Treadmill headroom?

With good running technique (not bouncing up and down much) , what do you think would be a minimum headroom for a treadmill.
I’m assuming the distance between top of head to ceiling when one the treadmill and shoes.
Yes, I have a fairly low basement ceiling.

Keep in mind if you ever want to use the incline, that will also affect your measurement.

yes. the lack of incline could suck, but i’d rather have the mill than not.
i’ll likely only use it when i have to squeeze a quick run in at 2% incline or so.
i’ve measured things out and as long as i don’t ‘bob’ up and down more than 3 inches, it could work.
i’m pretty sure i don’t…

I did all of my running last year on a treadmill on a ship with a pipe next to my head. The three inches of clearance that you’re talking about was probably enough most of the time (not much clearance, though). Sometimes I’d take a few longer strides (sort of stretching out while tired) and bumped my head doing that.

If your basement is unfinished - set it up between the floor joists. It will buy you plenty of room.

That is how I have mine set up. No issues.

the room it’s going in has been finished…i suppose if i bop my head i could always re-unfinished a section. the room is now just a workshop/gym anyways…a hole in the ceiling couldn’t hurt. wife will love it!

I have a treadmill in my basement. Always run on 2% incline. I ran for 3 years with no “ceiling” and never worried.

Finished it 8 years ago with a drop ceiling. would have to measure to see where I am as a standing/still position compared to drop. But in 8 years I have never hit the celing or felt ever even uncomfortable when running.

I suspect the difference between standing and running is negligible. As in 2-3 inches at most.

My advice is finish the basement and don’t worry. If I had found a problem after finishing the basement I would say the finishing would still have been worth it (I would move tread to garage or sell)
