Traveling through Chicago from WI into Indiana...best route?

Several times I have asked for driving directions from the fine folks here and always get great advice so I’m hoping for some more help! Driving to Indiana from WI…typically I would take I39 to I88 and then get on I55. Then take the Skyway towards Indiana. In the past this has worked well but I’m wondering if there is any major construction to worry about? Also, I will be passing through the city on a Tuesday afternoon around 3-4pm. Any advice is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

All depends on where in Indiana you are headed…

Northern Indiana…I’ll be heading towards Detroit.

The question isn’t what’s the best route - you should ask “when’s the best time?” I’d try to shoot for a time window about an hour earlier than you’re planning.

There is construction on the skyway, but there is construction everywhere in Chicago in the summer. I would try to leave about an hour earlier than you are planning if you can. The traffic at 4 is bad.

got it!

88 and 55 don’t meet, unless you take it into the city then go south. Just take 39 to 80 then go east on 80. Probably the best way to avoid the traffic

I should have clarified…was going to take 88 to 355 south and then on to 55. I will consider going 39 to 80 though as you suggested. Thanks.

355 is under work from the extension to I 80 stay away from there.

Well last time I was thru they had a major construction project on 80 right at the toll plaza headed east(so what else is new).

But is it okay to take 355 south from 88 and then go north on 55?

You don’t happen to have iPass? Without iPass any routes get even worse.

My wife just drove the 80 section(@294) on Friday early afternoon - 1 1/2 hours for 3 miles. Maybe she was aggrandizing, but I am sure it was quite bad.

No advice, just wishing you luck and patience.

My wife said coming back is much better.

you can take 355 to 55 then head into chicago to pick up 90/94 but unless its at midnight your going to run into a lot of traffic if you can get to 80 you might hit some traffic at the border but it’ll be less traffic and easier to navigate
.

Take the ferry to Michigan and drive south. A lot more scenic than Gary Indiana.

294 all the way to 94. But it also depends on where you’re going in Indiana.
