Travel to Frederica, Denmark

Hi. I’ve been reading/following this forum for some time now, and have a question to ask (hopefully there is someone who can help!). I have qualified for World Long Course Tri next August in Frederica and want to start preparing for the trip now (use some of the points that I have saved up over the years, so gotta get things in motion now!). I’ll be flying out of eastern Canada (I suspect Halifax to Toronto, then overseas). Here is my question to anyone that has been to Frederica before: where did you land?? Copenhagen seems way to far (and on another land mass), and there doesn;t seem to be anything in Frederica. the race website is not up yet, so I cannot get any info that way. what would be best, fly into Germany, then rail into Frederica??? what are your suggestions??

thanks,

kurt

I’m from Denmark… Maybe I can help… We only have 2 big airports in Denmark (we’re only a bit over 5 mio.). Copenhagen and a “airport-town” called Billund. Billund is in the same “island” as Fredericia… But I don’t know if the planes flies overseas from Billund. But it’s not a big problem from Copenhagen to Fredericia, you can take the train from the airport to “Hovedbanegården translated to mainstation” and when from Hovedbanegården to Fredericia, I think it will take a bit over 2 hours…

Kurt,

I also qualified for Denmark. I emailed TriCan about arrangements and they indicated that they will be working with a travel agent and have packages put together. They said the delay was with race organization at the ITU level because of the focus on the olympics. TriCan said they would be contacting all the qualifiers once the race information was finalized and available.

Du L/C Worlds were in Frederica in 2004. The transfer from Copenhagen to Billund is the way to go.

Frederica is a lovely town and the local organizer is top notch. I found the Seaman’s Hotel very convenient as I could walk to the start.

Plan on a full wetsuit. The water was very cold (August 1st) and LOADED with Jellyfish.

Good luck.

i’m also in.

as much as i’d love to fly on airmiles or something similar (for free), i’ve been advised it’s best to fly with the group from people that have gone previously.

it’ll be cool to meet everyone that is going!

thanks for the suggestions (and advice) everyone. sounds like Copenhagen is the way to go, then train to Frederica. as for the jelly’s…being on the east coast, and most of our races are in the ocean, I’m pretty used to them (if you can really ever get used to them…not much fun getting stung in the tongue, a few years back!).

thanks again.

well, see you all in our lovely country! Put on a slowtwitch T-shirt so that we can recognize you.

Martin, and Schmidt-DK,

my wife and I are really looking forward to spending some time in Denmark. we are planning a bit of a holiday surrounding the race. Rayleen (my wife) is currently in school studying her Masters in Architecture, so she is quite excited to have the opportunity to check out the various buildings throughout Denmark. we are also planning on travelling into Germany as well.

Second or third to the train idea, i live in Copenhagen and am hoping to race in Fredercia too. We’ll take the train i think, they are bike friendly, cheap and reliable here. Good thing too as cars are prohibitively expensive.

Looking forward to my first trip to Jutland.

What do you mean about expensive cars. Just because I paid 90.000 USD for my new BMW?

Guess it´s about four times the US price :frowning:

Kurt, bring your bike, and I will love to show you the beautiful northern part of Sealand (Sjælland) with all the lovely castles.

Kreutzer,

thanks for the invite…the plans are nowhere near being finalized (I’m just starting to realize how expensive it is going to be to fly!), so we will certainly entertain any offers to be shown around the countryside. My Danish geography sucks…where would you be, in relation to Frederica??

kurt

I will be 200 km and two bridges away, 20 km north of Copenhagen.
