Just curiosity here to see people views. Transgender while still a very tiny part of the population is growing. This is not intended to be a debate, politics, etc it is just to see views and where people think it is too much.
So my question is if you support or are against trans, where is too much for you? Below are some examples and I will offer my opinion. Feels free to add to the scenarios and see where people land.
18+ want to “identify” as the opposite gender - I am 100% okay with this and will recognize them as they wish to be.
18+ want to have surgery to change genders - I am 100% okay with this
“Identify” as the opposite gender and do not want to play for the gender they were born with in that sport - I am not really in favor of this.
Haven’t hit puberty and want to take puberty blockers - I am 100% against this
So I guess I “draw the line” under the age of 18 and IMO this is important as brain development is still ongoing and through my experiences as a child, many of us kids thought one way, then we grew up understood the world more and changed our views in many ways.
I don’t feel it’s my place to be drawing any lines on something I have no understanding of. I can’t even wrap my head around the idea of being, “against trans”.
Yeah, I’m pretty much the same. Maybe a little more conservative on the sports issue. Who the hell I’m I to be making decisions about gender treatment for someone else’s kids. That should be between the kid, the parents and medical professionals.
i waver on this. On one hand I’d counsel against them if it involved a dear friend or close family.
But I also think it’s crazy hypocritical that our government is 100% against blockers, but also favourably disposed to the anti vax movement. If you’re interested in the child’s welfare then you’re consistent with it, or ought to be.
Or we could talk about having tons of kids on medications for ADHD or that we basically let parents fill their kids heads with all kinds of harmful religious nonsense. I’d guess the number of adults screwed up because their parents permitted/encouraged them to be transgender isn’t even a drop in the bucket compared to the number of adults who are screwed up because of religious indoctrination.
In recent months there the results of several large studies have been released.
For several years Austria, Switzerland and Germany have been collaborating on a study on care for transgender youth. It is more than 400 pages and represents the collective expertise of 26 medical and psychotherapeutic professional organizations, along with two self-representation organizations from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Brings up an interesting point. If it was my kid, not happening. If it’s close family and their kid I would like to provide counsel with our entire family and let them make their decision. Family with zero relation, they can do as they please. If they ask me, I would give my honest counsel on the matter.
The entire matter confuses me because “they” (transgender advocates/supporters) are continually asking for (demanding/adding) something new or additional.
I first heard of a HS student group speaking at a HS Staff meeting in 2009ish, requesting that the school bldg. institute a “Safe Space” policy in all classrooms. In 15yrs. in the halls, cafe, class/locker rooms, fields, I never heard or saw a student teased, harassed, scapegoated, or physically confronted. At that time the group was titled LG. So, I thought - of course, put up a rainbow sign in the room, and enforce safety. I was already anyway. Sometime later B, then T, then Q, and +, and now trans. (Is + equal to Trans? Should trans be capitalized T? I no longer know.). I sincerely ask… what letter of the alphabet/symbol is next? What will they request/demand? The whole “cat” identity leaves the Acronym group(s) with a shrinking level of credibility in my view. What small %age group will be next “In order to form a more perfect Union.”
If someone is 18yo… They can live entirely and love as they please. Hormones/medications/surgeries - help yourself… But $costs are self as well. Overall medical insurance rates and premiums should not increase for the rest of us because you wanna be what/who you are. I feel the same about motorcycle helmet laws. You wanna ride w/o a helmet? Go ahead. But I’m not going to vote to pay an increase for your lifelong TBI. Live as you please.
Trans in sports? About 20yrs. ago the sporting world decided to take away medals, and records from Soviet Bloc athletes for hormonally testing far less than what constitutes an unfair advantage now. We’d better be ready to “re-re-write” the record books, and “re-re-instate” medals. 30yrs. ago a Gold Medalist friend of mine was required to test genetically to prove female.
If “they” (respectfully) want to compete… Start another league - and be prepared to fight as long and as hard as BJ King did for recognition and competition.
Prepubescent puberty blockers? A team of medical and psychological professionals and parents should unanimously agree, based on genotypical/phenotypical/behavioral exam results.
This is what I think too- but if a male genitaled teen was wandering around my daughter’s locker room and she was uncomfortable- I would probably get involved in pushing for a better solution.
Yes I would counsel. I would not offer my opinions as it is not my kid. I would counsel with my advice and I would do it in a formal setting, perhaps with others to provide additional advice (counsel) on the matter.
If parents of an 8 year old want to put their kid on puberty blockers, I would gather my family and we would counsel them on the matter. Give them advice (counsel) so they can make the most informed decision possible.
I think a lot of people have strong opinions because we all want to shape society to reflect our values and exist in a society that we feel is just.
A lot of people are against suicide. Why if it’s not your business?
Against abortion? Why if it’s not your business?
Against drugs? Why if it’s not your business?
There are a number of things that people are not allowed to do or that have strong opponents yet they don’t have any direct bearing on anyone else’s life.
I don’t know the right answer but I do know that I don’t blame someone for having an opinion on controversial practices in their own society.
If you are going to give advice you might want to do a little research about the topic. The only 8 year olds on puberty blockers are those with precocious puberty. Puberty blockers in trans youth are still very rare. In the rare case of a trans youth getting prescribed puberty blockers it usually happens around age 11 or 12.
If the child male or female? Nine is usually considered the lower end of Tanner stage 2 for males. If female it can start at 8 and puberty blockers have been shown to be safe, affective, and reversable.
How long has the child been questioning their gender?
Are you really free if you cannot decide for yourself if you live or die? With provisions for mental health.
How do you justify forbidding abortion before bilateral brain activity if I can pull the plug on you in the same circumstances?
We already allow drug use in all sorts of situations we have decided are no one else’s business. Alcohol, THC, etc.
You are free to have opinions and preach against all sorts of things. I may think you are wrong, but you are allowed to be wrong. It is the laws like forbidding adultery, gay sex, interracial marriage, gay marriage, premarital sex, minorities buying houses in certain parts of town, minorities drinking from the same water fountain, riding at the front of the bus, that over time we have figured out are on the wrong side.
Coming from someone who does not relate at all to gender dysphoria. I don’t get it, never felt anything like it, think any gender can pretty much do anything any other gender can do so not relating to the need to change it. But I don’t need to get it to understand it isn’t my business.
I think anti-trans rules and laws will be the above except for things like youth restrooms and sports.
I could be wrong. But I don’t think so. (I mean of course I think I am right, or else I wouldn’t think this way)
