Trans cyclist Emily Bridges still listed as 'male' by British Cycling – but she's allowed to compete in female events

Competing against 5 times Olympic championDame Laura Kenny on Saturday should be interesting.

How will the triathlon world react when we get our first pro trans athlete beating women?

Also another talking point for me, if you’re selecting young athletes now for future Olympic cycles to coach and fund and you’re living and dying on results for funding, would you be targeting transitioning athletes and will this lead to all trans teams in the future?

I hope tri doesn’t get woke and ruin women sports. Putting dudes to swim or bike against women is ridiculous, anti-scientific, and ruins women sports.

i predict a calm, reasonable discussion.

to your second talking point - yeah, it’s a doozy. i honestly have no idea. i was trying to start conversations about this a few years ago and not getting too many bites, but i think it’s arrived now and is no longer hypothetical. i also think a lot of people are open-minded or even just indifferent to this until someone beats them in a race . . . then they really start caring!

Except they’re not “dudes”.

  1. Probably outrage or ambivalence, depending on each person’s ethical and moral compass.

  2. Many countries already use various testing procedures to identify athletes with a strong probability of being successful at sports, either through genetics or other factors like race, etc. No doubt at all that people would do this, but not for the reasons you cite.

Maybe you should review first grade biology class again. Pathetic. He is a man, at least he won’t hurt anyone like the guy fighting women on UFC, but will steal women’s medals and/or scholarships for NCAA e.g.

I can tell this is not going to turn out well for my sanity so I am going to bow out now.

Except they’re not “dudes”.

what are they?

I think every argument For AND Against M2F trans athletes has been posted here

No need to go through them all again

Same. I wasn’t going to start, but I will now.

These are men looking to police women’s bodies. In a misguided attempt to “protect” cis women from trans women, men are offering un-asked for opinions on our bodies, and telling us we are weaker than men and need protecting.

When cis female athletes advocate for change, then I will pay attention.

I hope that males will realise that this is a well-meaning — but extremely misguided — attempt to defend (powerful) women who have not asked for defending.

Except they’re not “dudes”.

This is easy…as in from your 6th grade science class easy.

If you have XY chromosomes you are a male
If you have XX chromosomes you are female

Argument over.

Mike Finch interviewed Ross Tucker on this (with Lia Thomas as the catalyst) in his
The Real Science of Sport Podcast published last week, which I recommend: https://podcasts.apple.com/…-age-of/id1461719225
.

This topic discussed before, I think we as a triathlon forum/community should focus what we can fix. Check the USAT transgender policy. Too lax. All you need is someone else to state you are of “said” gender. Yes… the person can switch mid season and affect scoring

A certain moderator around here has issues with posters who misgender a trans person. Show some respect. Or not: your choice.

Really! There must be thousands of transitioning national-caliber triathletes out there ripe for recruiting.

This topic discussed before, I think we as a triathlon forum/community should focus what we can fix.

And WE - as a triathlon forum/community - don’t have the means nor authority to actually “fix” anything, only discuss/argue about fixing it

Furthermore WE - as a triathlon forum/community - might not even be real, just a bunch of 1s and 0s LOL

As long as there are exceptions for “XY females” and other genetic anomalies. And then the complex situation of people who present externally as women, but have internal testes. These are all pretty rare, but should still be handled because if we’re writing a rulebook.

Genetics are messy enough (life is often more complex than it appears in “6th grade”) that I tend to think that the presence of testosterone is a cleaner approach. And this is the approach actually being used by various governing bodies.

so what about the approximately 500,000 people in the US and more than 10M+ in the world who are XXY (maybe that was 7th grade? : )

What about the ~10,000 with XX / XY (called 49er syndrome)?

What about the XY whose gonad’s stopped developing gestationally?
What about the XX who are CAH, produce testosterone more commonly seen in XY, who wish to compete with males?

I am not being argumentative. But this question is anything but easy. Which is why there has to be a serious discussion that leads to specific policies well understood by everyone.

Don’t forget to add that Sex and Gender are not the same thing and should not be used interchangeably

Calling for censorship of any opinion different to yours??? Must be hard to have such a weak conviction that you have to censor any other opinion that show how wrong your are… Sounds like a want to be little dictator…

To quote Voltaire: “It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong”

P.S.: He is still a man though :stuck_out_tongue:
