TrainingPeaks FTP estimate?

Do people find the TrainingPeaks FTP estimates (which have been arriving via email) to be ballpark accurate?

I’ve been a little skeptical because they’ve been ~20-30W higher than what I get from a 20:00 FTP test on my trainer. But this could be just because I don’t bring my whole A game to the trainer, but I do on the road when some asshole is trying to take my Strava KOM.

Its true, any name appearing above mine on a strava list is that of an asshole, end of discussion.

Most people make less power on a trainer indoors, in part because of heat and in part because of differing inertia.

Get a huge fan, plenty of airflow, and a trainer with a huge flywheel to bring it closer.

Have they for you?
I have mine set to send via e-mail but haven’t seen a one.
Maybe no changes necessary … yet.

They calculate it by looking at the last 90 days (I think) and taking 95% of highest AVERAGE power for 20minutes. Or 100% of highest NORMALIZED power for one hour.

So somewhere down the line you hit one of those points. I keep it turned off because it was annoying more than anything.

I’ve found them to be pretty accurate so far. Then again, I’ve only received one update and it was after a tough group ride. I don’t do any testing on the trainer. If it’s not a race or hard group ride, I just don’t push myself hard enough. I can maintain the zone targets, etc. for my plan but I’m not setting any records on the trainer.
