Training with Bacon?

If I had an online dating profile it would say that my likes are:

  • Long bike rides
  • Bacon

So, while out on a long bike ride and dreaming of bacon. I thought why not bring bacon out on a long ride? Fry it up a few hours before (or the night before if you ride early in the morning), wrap it up in some plastic, stuff it in a sandwich bag and ENJOY!

Has anyone else ever tried this? If so, how did it go?

I think this might actually work, especially if you’re on an aerobic ride and have been doing one of the low carb, moderate protein, high fat diets. I find that, as I’ve gotten more into that dietary regime, I haven’t wanted “traditional” workout fuel on rides. Instead, I’ve been craving things like nuts/nut butters, PB&Co chocolate PB (1:1 carb:protein ratio!), etc. No reason that bacon wouldn’t fit the bill!

I know a girl who swears by a McD’s quarter-pounder w/cheese at the 70-mi point of a 110 mi ride, so I’d think bacon, or perhaps a bacon sandwich might hit the spot. Also, don’t know if they still do it but back in the 80s the Tour riders used have cheese sandwiches at around 4 hrs into a long stage.

I loved him in Footloose.

I am with ya on wanting non traditional type (gels, etc) foods on long rides.

Plus bacon has fat, protein and a good amount of sodium. Not to mention its fucking delicious

Simon Whitfield weighed in on this topic a couple years ago, and it still sticks in my mind

She sounds like marriage material to me. Rides 110 miles? Enjoys quarter pounders? What’s not to love?

My name is COJO and I have a bacon problem.

I have brought bacon on long rides…also brought beef jerky. The protein is supposed to help balance your blood sugar plus, as someone already said above…it has fats and salt and its delicious. I cook my bacon in the microwave(supposed to make it a little less greasy) and throw it in my pocket. yum yum!!!

I loved her in Law & Order.

in the winter I will do turkey sandwiches, choc chip cookies and a bunch of other goodies. My stomach can’t take it in the southern summer heat. I am def going to have to try bacon this winter.

Bacon is an optional (to those weak in the brain) ingredient in thew Allan Lim rice cake. I am not weak of mind so I consider it a mandatory ingredient.

At a recent “Over the Hump” mountain bike race, a local bike shop called The Path had an on course aid station with - wait for it - BACON! Yep, nothing other than dixie cups filled with crispy bacon were handed out on course, and even more tasty morsels were waiting at the finish line!

That’s what I was going to say! The book Feed Zone has a few recipes for rice cakes that use bacon.

Sodium in bacon means fewer of those pesky lava salts to swallow.
