Training Wheelset

Looking for a new pair of training wheelset. Had been using Aksium for quite sometime. Changed to a new bike and setup recently, hence the change in wheelset.

Recommendations:
Fulcrum Racing 5
Soul S4.0 (Cost almost twice the price of a Fulcrum Racing 5)
Shimano RS20

Any recommendations?

Cheers

pretty aero too!

It is slightly cheaper than the Fulcrum Racing 5. And the weight is pretty impressive. But hows the ride quality?

ride quality is generally a function of tires and tubes. heavier riders (200+ lbs) will probably be dissatisfied with a 24 spoked wheel even though the 30mm rim makes it pretty stiff.

Performance Forte Titans. The most bang for the buck your going to get. Nailed an asphalt curb with my front today and it survived. Not head on, but it was a solid jolt. I’ve tacoed a 32 spoke wheel with less impact.

I am pretty light. around 68-70kg… hmmm

I have the racing 5’s. They’re good wheels, quite durable. I weighed 200 lb for a decent portion of my time riding on them. They didn’t seem to complain, are still true and haven’t broken. I notice nothing different about them from any other wheel I’ve ridden, except the freewheel is quite loud. While they’re solid wheels, they definitely aren’t worth the price. I just got a used pair of 404s for the price I payed for the Fulcrums new.

also, I highly recommend these: http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/50/1d/pr-Bike_Parts_Accessories-Bell_Training_Wheels-resized200.jpg[/url/

The fulcrum racing 5 are only 266AUD with free delivery, i deemed it to be rather cheap.

As i have never used this before, so i am asking around. How does this compare with like Aksium or RS20, for people who have tried them before. The P-X wheelset looks rather cheap too.

JMHO but i think you’ll find - if you have a good local bike shop - that having a local wrench build you a set of wheels with Ultegra/Chorus hubs, 36 spokes (the right guage for your weight) and Mavic open pro rims you will have a set of bomb proof wheels at a good price (factor in shipping and all that) that will last forever. plus a local builder who will stand by them should they need adjustment/repair. plus a little good will from the local shop.
for ‘trainng wheels’ it’s often better to look local and old school rather than than the latest. save the money for race wheels.
good luck

Hands down the best deal on OpenPro’s anywhere…my LBS wanted $480 + tax to build these up…

OpenPro on 32 hole Ultegras for $260:

I challenge you to break them! Not a bad idea to check with your local boys to see what they can do, but I doubt it will be anywhere near BWW.

Aksium’s are nice, but are not anywhere in the same bomber class as Open Pros. I had a set of Mavic O4CD’s made in 1991 for my Litespeed and rode them non-stop for 5 years before selling them with the bike…still as good as the day I purchased them.
