Training Peaks / Garmin 305 incompatibility?

I use Training peaks software and have a Garmin 305 that I have used together for 3 months. I keep losing workouts after I exceed 3.5 hrs of stored data (every sec) without downloading. So I’m thinking of changing the data storage to the Smart Recording but I vaguely remember that the Smart format is not compatible with Training Peaks because of the non linear time scale. Any truth to that? Comments? Thanks, Graham

I believe that you just need to use either WKO+ or Device Agent software programs to download from the 305, then upload directly to TP. If you can’t see the file date you want, then just need to delete the files stored on the 305 and upload the later dates to TP. I am not sure of the length of time which these programs will search on the unit, but you can experiment with that process to find out.

In the past I’ve exported from Garmin Training Center into TP to give it the files I want, with good success. If that doesn’t work, PM me and I can send over some other options.

I use TP and the 305 on smart recording all the time. In fact, I very rarely ever notice the lack of detail. Occasionally on twisty courses some corners get squared off, but no big deal. The average data is still good and the graphs come out fine.

Thanks…I was looking for someone with actual experience to confirm that!

305 direct to TP has been touchy on the Mac. I download the 305 data to Ascent, then export to TP from Ascent. Also works for exporting single days from many weeks of 305 data since TP only takes a day at a time.

Here is the official reply from Training peaks…

“Whenever you are using smart recording the best option is to export the .tcx file out of Garmin Training Center and import into WKO+ manually. This will utilize Garmin’s software to smooth it out and possibly provide a better data set for WKO+ to read. Instructions are below. Short of that, there is not a lot that can be done. I hope that helps.

So you might think twice about direct downloading since I think it affects averages and the stress calculations.
