Training on 90mm deep dish wheels. I am going to be that guy

After installing my Boyd wheels onto my Transition I will not be taking them off. Changing the pads and adjusting the brakes on this setup to go from Mavic Ksyriums to the Boyds took way to long. (I am still actually sorting out the rear brake and the fit of the rear hub into the horizontal dropouts)

For the two rides a week I am on the transition from May until September I will be on 90mm wheels. I will do so in the wee hours of the morning to avoiding looking like a tool.

I had to get this off my chest. Please feel free to make fun of me…

Why worry about it? I ride a 404/808 on my P3 as my training wheels. Why? Because I can. And they’re not my race wheels so I still get faster on race day.

So for me…

Do I care what people think when I ride by/with them? No. Do I care about being happy and having fun? Yes. Do deep wheels make me happy? Yes. Does that make me a materialistic tool? Maybe.

Dude no reason not to rock those wheels all the time. I rock my zipps 808s all summer long. I paid for em I want to ride em! I just change tires come race day.

Do people really make fun of other riders because they are riding deep section wheels? Hell, I ride my disc from time to time in training just because I love the look and feel of it.

I put on my disc cover a couple of weeks ago and am not planning to take it off until the season’s races are done. Too much trouble to get it adjusted just right so it doesn’t rub.

I train on my race wheels, never think twice about it. And I race faster because of it. (808s with a rear wheel cover.) People that mock other’s rides are usually slow as shit anyway. Don’t give it a second thought.

Yep, I love my deep wheels and the noise they make. They stay on all year, just swap out tires before races!

Racing season= race wheels. The race wheels go on just before the first race and remain on until just after the last race. Changing wheels mid season?

I plan to be that guy as well. I want to enjoy good stuff all the time. When I pull the trigger on wheels, they will go on to stay. They just too doggone good to leave in a closet.

How does training on them make you race faster?

I plan to get some Flo 60’s at some point with a wheelbuilder cover for racing. Especially if I end up with the aluminum rim version, I’m never taking them off my tri bike unless I’m putting them on whatever aero road bike I eventually buy .

90mm up front would be a little much for me for windy days but hey, maybe if you get used to running 90mm day in and day out, crosswinds will become nothing to you.

I was that guy, until I hit some large chunk of metal in the road and wrote off a $2000 wheel as opposed to a $80 training wheel.

I am a 180lb rider, back ground was as a MTB’r
Hopefully I will be okay?

You become much more capable of riding in crosswinds in general–holding a firm line on the flats, staying in aero on descents (with and without crosswind). The principle of specificity applies here. I see so many people in races who can’t hold a damn line with their deep CCs.

I roll mine all the time and I have never cracked a carbon road rim. Carbon mountain biking rims, on the other hand…I think I just cracked my 4th.

No reason to not use your race wheels whenever you like, but changing tires just before races day is not the best idea. Pinch flats from improper installation can take a while (even over a day) to manifest themselves. Improper tire/tube installation just before the race is the main reason you hear so many tires blow out in transition (not rising temps as many people believe)

haters gonna hate.

i personally start the season off in training wheels and rock them until my first race that i want to gauge my A race abilities on. once the race wheels go on, i leave the rear carbon with wheel cover on and switch the front back and forth as if there are more than 2 outdoor rides between races.

plus, who cares what people think of you…

What are “race wheels”? Go stock baby!!! Deep dish is for pussies.

Hey! Some of us need that extra 7 seconds, even on a training ride. It’s not a pussy thing, it’s an ego thing. Disposable income well spent.

Can you afford to wreck them? If yes, then don’t worry about it.

If not, then you may want to reconsider?
