Training in Myrtle Beach

Hey guys. Weathers is getting better here but we’re going to take a week out to train a little farther south.

Any advise recommendations for training in Myrtle Beach, SC?

Any fast group rides or club rides?

Pool/Masters recommendations?

I’m not a huge fan of Myrtle Beach. Tooooooo much traffic for riding a bike. And mostly tourist that don’t know where they are going year round because of all the shopping, shows, and golf. I know there is a pool down there that you pay as you go. Unfortunately I can’t give you directions other than I believe its around 29th and Kings highway. It might be a street or 2 back from there. I don’t remember it being far from where they hold the Myrlte Beach Marathon. And there’s a big ocean. I’d say if you were heading for that area either stay way north or way south of the Myrtle Beach proper. I’m not from the area though. I’d go to the quieter NC beaches or GA.

I was in Myrtle Beach last week and the weather was great for training. I stayed at the Captain’s Quarters on Ocean Blvd and ran for at least an hour a day on the beach. The pool there is big enough to train in but my only real swim day was when it was raining and no one else came outside to swim. The riding is not great due to heavy traffic but I managed to get in some decent rides and the motorists were really good at road etiquette (there are “Share the Road” signs all over … maybe this helps). I met up with a guy named Rich who is a road cyclist and he hammered me for my 2nd outdoor ride since IMFL. He was telling me about some group rides but when I went to find them there was no one around (it was raining hard and I might have been at the wrong intersection) so I’m sure that there are a few people that you might find to ride with. When I was there I did a ride one day with the Hamilton Hammerhead Tri club (fellow Canadians enjoying March break) and heard that they had been swimming at the University pool (Coastal Carolina U) which is where I’ll try to go to swim the next time I head south.

Enjoy your trip.
