Training in Germany

I am going to be in Hamburg Germany for the ITU world champs (my husband is competing… i am prepping for IMFL) and I am wondering if anyone out there knows the area?

If you know the bike course for the race… would it be a good one to ride 4-5 times… saftey? traffic?

Any places I want to train that I don’t know about (I don’t know any!)

I much appreciate any tidbits on places to train swim, anything anyone might have!

Hi!

I am not from Hamburg, but tri-mag.de offered some advice on training there in its special issue. Summed up:

Swim: Alsterschwimmhalle or Bondenwald-Bad , nice lakes are Oortkatener See, Eichbaumsee, Neuländer See

Bike: Do not bike in the city, it won’t be much fun. South of the river Elbe (Harburger Berge) is hilly, flat courses can be found behind “Wedel” and “Blankenese” (try google maps)

Rund: Round the Alster in the city centre or in the “Stadtpark”

Hope you have a lot of fun in Hamburg.

Markus

It depends where you are staying and if you have a car.
Public transportation in Greater Hamburg should be no problem. http://www.hvv.de/index_en.html

Swim:
Overview:

Alsterschwimmhalle - 50m indoor - some (3-5?) separated lanes for different speeds
Probably first choice

http://maps.google.de/...schwimmhalle+hamburg

Nice quiet heated 25m outdoor pool with one separated lane for swimmers:
Kaifu Bad (also has 50m outdoor pool)
http://www.baederland.de/...php?bid=26&pic=3

Open water swim:
Oortkatener See (30min car drive south-east)
http://maps.google.de/maps?f=q&hl=de&geocode=&q=overwerder+weg
Großensee (45 min car drive east)
http://maps.google.de/...oßensee+trittau

Bike:
The bike course is pretty simple and straight forward. Not flat but without real hills. During daytime no fun to ride because of heavy traffic, especially from Alster/Downtown to Altona.

Flat bike courses with some headwinds:
Alster alongside Elbe to Wedel and further west.

Vierlanden (south east)

Duvenstedt (north)

Basically the farer you drive outside Hamburg the nicer and less hectic it gets.

Run:
First choice would be around Aussenalster (7.5k)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Außenalster

From there you could also run along Alsterlauf north to Alstertal and back.

Stadtpark has a 5k loop
http://maps.google.de/…;q=Stadtpark+hamburg

Located next to Stadtpark is Jahnkampfbahn which has a 400m track.

From downtown along Elbe west to Blankenese and further or back.

If you are fluent in Deutsch try this… www.3athlon.de the slowtwitch of Germany.

Is your slave in the Yahoo groups for Worlds? We have a nice little place we can all share questions.
Current plan is to meet in the Hotel lobby on Weds at 4:30 and meet each other, and
talk about things like doing some training together. I expect I will be dealing with flight
issues that my first priority will be to get my legs back for the race. If I am not trained
by the trip, it will be too late anyways.

Dave

My slave… ha ha ha… I like that… isn’t in the Yahoo Group for worlds. How do we get on that?

Where are you staying? We are in the Baseler Hoff ( I think I spelled that wrong).

 Mary!

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL OF THE GREAT INFO!!!

All the races in AG worlds got an invite to the Yahoo group? Since one has to be invited, if he did not get,
have him call Gina at USAT and ask for a new invite.

I am staying in the Team USA host hotel, the holiday inn. In the lobby at 4:30 weds, is the plan for folks
that are their to meet and see what we can do.
