So I’ll be in Boston in August.and will probably be booked into a hotel at the harbour near the convention center for a week.
Any locals have any suggestions as to where I could go out for a run (possibly swim if there is no pool at the hotel)?
Or, should I rather prepare for treadmill exercise…?
Each time I visit I usually run around the Charles River. Great bike and walking paths and lots of bridges to go over and back. Great views as well from both sides of the river.
You’re a short run from the Boston commons and then the Charles River. When I’m not looking for hills I end up doing a good amount of my runs around the river. Running paths on both sides and you can run down to Harvard, take the pedestrian bridge to the Cambridge side, run back to the Museum of Science, cross the river again and be back at the beginning. That was confusing so here’s a map…

It’s easy to just keep going further and get a lot of mileage in.
I swim at MIT, 50m long course right now but not sure about in August. Costs $10 for drop in.
As the 2 posters above have said, the esplanade is your best best. You can run basically as far as you want on that. One suggestion I have heard in the past is to run the last x miles of the marathon course, just to check it out. You’d have all the street crossings so it might not be the best run, but might be interesting if you are a running geek:)
Around the charles river is fine for running but you will not get anything out of a bike here as it is conjested with runners and walkers. You will not be able to get up to speed. For that I would suggest riding out west to the Concord area or north along the northshore coast to " get away" from the crowds, lights and stop signs.
If Northshore, it would be best to take the commuter rail up to Beverly and leave from there. Its hot in Aug and the coast would be cooler.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, looks like I’ll get some outdoor running in after all.
Seeing as my hotel will be in the north end, you just posted a perfect 15k loop with that Strava segment right there.
If you’re looking for dinner in the North End the Italian food is spot on. And as another poster said it’s fun to check out the marathon course but I’d never run the portion in the city. I’d drive out to Boston College and run Heartbreak if you have that kind of time.
Thanks for the heads up.
I won’t be able to bring a bike anyway - too much hassle for a one week trip from Europe to be honest and it’s going to be business time too.
Putting a hard bike block before and after the trip and plan to use the week for “recovery”…
Edit: Re.: Italian Food - check.
I’ll have some time off by the end of that week so I’ll try and check out the infamous parts of marathon course.
^^Watch out for the Severed Heads.

Another option for running is to heads towards Southie and run the causeway loop at Castle Island or Day Blvd along the water. Some fantastic views of the city and a cooler sea breeze.
