Training in Auckland/ NZ

I’m spending a couple months in New Zealand, based in Auckland, with some side trips elsewhere. Do any of you Kiwis out there have any suggestions for good areas for long rides and/or runs in the Auckland area? I’m staying in the Beach Haven area but have a car and can travel elsewhere for good, low-traffic (if possible) routes. Also, if you know of any good areas that are driving distance from Auckland where I could spend a weekend to sight see and train, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

north shore as some great places to train on the roads head out through glenfield and ether left to the waitakeres if you want hills or towards albany if you want some kiwi rolling riding on sundays there is severil bunches from the top of albany hill. there is also some great groups in the area on saturday there is severil stay away from the nhts group you will be doing the training that the coach needs not what any one else does. if you pm me will give you some good contacts in the beach have area.

Moved from Michigan to AKL in August 2011. Call me a pussy but have only ridden outside twice. Roads are narrow. Traffic, even in the outlying areas, is consistent going by, with very very little margin for error… Just doesn’t meet my personal safety threshhold. Doing a lot of riding on my trainer.

OTOH, ocean swimming is awesome and lots of great trail running. Buy this book, “Walking the Waitakere Ranges” when you get here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/news/article.cfm?c_id=7&objectid=10722307 and buy the DOC Recreation Map of the area. Great long runs. Bring or buy a mountain bike and go to Woodhills MTB Park: http://www.bikepark.co.nz/ or better yet get down to Rotorua and go here: http://www.riderotorua.com/ Simply the best MTB in the world.

This is an amazing place to live. You may never leave. I was only supposed to stay 9 months and now I’m here for good (probably). PM me when you get here.

I have a couple free days next week on the North Island- can you name a few tri-dedicated shops and/or good bike shops worth visiting? Auckland, Taupo, or Rotorua would work.

thanks
