I wanted to get some thoughts from people on Ironman training using only crossfit and crossfit endurance. I have had a couple of friends really take their results to the next level with this, but I’m uncertain about some aspects of this. Some people I have talked to say they literally only do crossfit and crossfit endurance that includes bike interval workouts and swim interval workouts, other say they do PRIMARILY cf and cfe but also swim/bike/run some extra. This isn’t my first ironman, but of course I’d always like to PR. Can this work? Do I have to modify? Whats the secret!?
First!
ETA: I’ve dreamed of posting “First” on a thread like this forever.
Also if anyone knows of any recent blogs/articles on the topic I’d love to see those too.
Why is it when the LA threads finally appear to have died down we have to have one of these pop up.
Whats the secret!?
The secret is to swim, bike and run as much as possible, consistently, but not so much that you get hurt.
Why is it when the LA threads finally appear to have died down we have to have one of these pop up.
Because only two things on here bring people together.
- LA
- A mutual hatred for CF

What does anything I said have to do with LA?
Seriously, enter “crossfit” in the search function to the right of the screen. You will get more than you ever wanted. Good luck.
What? LA is doing Crossfit now?
I don’t know if you are joking or not. CFE could potentially benefit as a supplement… I don’t know much about the program but can say with certainty that you need to swim, ride, and run your way through training. Don’t waste your time. If you want to do those three sports in the best possible way, just do those three sports.
What does anything I said have to do with LA?
Neither is forgiven.
Unfortunately I did try to start this as a serious question, it just looks like the Friday crowd was in a playful way. There’s no doubt I would continue to sbr, I guess the question really becomes an intensity vs. volume question. In all of my long course racing and training (1/2 IM and IM) I’ve always done a lot of volume. Now I’ve had friends finishing marathons and even Ironmans with over hour PR’s from doing primarily CFE, enough that their training hours were significantly reduced. I’m just trying to understand how much is “primarily.”
Don’t listen to any of these fools as the smart people realise that Crossfit is essential for success at the most important part of triathlon…THE AFTER PARTY!!!
I do think that higher intensity work is very important in long course racing. I also think that you do need the weekly vol to match it… You need to find the balance to get you to where you would like to be.
I train about 14-18 hours a week (at peak) and have had results that are better than lots of people that are training many more hours per week. Quality is what counts for me.
Who knows… If your friends are getting results, then go for it! Give it a try - nothing bad is going to come out of that! Best of luck!

Of course, 14-18 at peak is a lot of hours =)
Hopefully this thread can be entertaining throughout the lame Pro Bowl.

Since this seemed like a serious inquiry, here are a few past threads that come up using the search button:

There are plenty more, but this should get you started.
The last thread there links to a Triathlete magazine article. Outside magazine had a recent article about marathon training using CrossFit:

Thanks very much, this is really the kind of thing I was looking for.
Hahaha.

14-18 might be enough on the bike:)
