Training for a 5 mile Kayak w/o a Kayak

A friend of mine is doing a five mile swim and needs a support kayak to follow him. I want to help but I also know that 5 miles is a long time to be out there paddling. I am sure it wont be a problem but I am just curious if you guys think it will be possible to sufficiently train for the kayak w/o actually kayaking? I found great sites on strength and conditioning specifically for kayaking and was going to use that as a guide.

Five miles, one time? You don’t need any training for that. Depending on the kayak type, you should be much faster than the swimmer.

Thats what I was thinking. It’s not like I am chasing a speedboat. Thanks man, I just did not wantr to put him or his race at risk.

yah at imlp the pro swim was led by a paddle board. The lifeguards are on surfboards using just our hands to paddle . Easy to
keep up with a swimmer.

Have a great time and ho ho ho merry christmass

I got a kayak recently, having never done it in the past… figured it would be a good way to workout in the off season. My first time out, totally clueless, I did 3.2mi in an hour flat… not working very hard (or as hard as your friend swimming). Just watch a Youtube video or two on how to row properly and you’ll be set.

Get on that row machine! Any kind of variation of rows on machines or cable systems will provide lots base work. Also try sitting on a BOSU ball while doing your row exercises.
