Trainerroad FTP question

If you use a Computrainer with Trainerroad for FTP.

I plan to do the 20 min test tonight. Used to just do on course with Computrainer software. if I do in Trainerroad, does it automatically go to slope mode, or do I need to do anything?

I don’t have a computrainer but from the instructions that come onto the screen as I understand it TR will adjust your trainer automatically into slope mode for the 20min test
.

I have a Cycleops Powerbeam and it automatically switches from ERG to slope mode for the 20min interval for TR.

No direct experience as I have no smart trainer, but I have done a number of TR FTP tests and the on screen instructions during the test say the program will switch smart trainers to slope mode. Can’t say for sure it will work automatically on your particular trainer though.

FWIW - you can “fast forward” a workout with the curser and start it at any point you want so if you have to know in advance, you could just set it up to ride a few minutes over the transition point and see what happens.

When you load the course, there is a little button that you can toggle between slope and erg mode. I have a CT and do all my rides in slope where my wife rides the CT and does all her rides in Erg mode. You can then find the correct gear, normally I use middle of cassette and then use the +/- key on the head unit to gradually increase the slope up or down to get at the desired power level and cadence.

I’m convinced the ERG mode gives me calf heart attacks when I run and I have no problems if I do all my rides in the slope mode. Something with the constant resistance of the CT.

Seriously. I do all my rides in ERG mode and struggle with calf heart attacks, I will have to try this out.

Yes, it automatically switches to slope mode while using a CT. You have to do nothing but suffer.

Yep, TR takes care of that for you. Just make sure you are in an easy-ish gear before the test interval. If you’re in too big of a gear when it switches to slope mode, you’ll have to put out big power while downshifting to find a wattage that you are able to push.
