TrainerRoad and Zwift? How to complement one another?

Does anyone use both TR and Zwift? How do you use them together?

Race in Zwift, train in TR.

Race in Zwift, train in TR.

This is what I do too. I do a Tuesday vo2max-style ride on TR, and I do a race on Thursdays. I usually aim for something in the 40 minute range, and I try to push at threshold or a bit above if possible.

I run zwift every indoor ride. Most days I pick a Bot blob to go with that matches up with the planned workout I’m doing. Just basically float around in the blob or go off the front at times depending on the workout. TR running in ERG mode.

On really easy days it is usually more mentally stimulating to skip TR and just pick an easy Bot group to sit in with. Then there are days I race in Zwift that replace intensity in TR.

Same as above. Trainer Road for training, Zwift for racing.

Training program is Trainer Road. I connect my Kickr to my laptop running Trainer Road first, connecting via Bluetooth. TR is my workout program and the one directing my smart trainer in Erg mode.

Zwift then connected on the second laptop, via ANT+. Zwift used for racing (with DIRTY WATTZ!). If not in a race, I would leave it open while also using Trainer Road, having the avatar freely cycling to be able to get enough elevation gain to earn the Tron bike.

More than TR’s depth and variety of workouts, it’s how the program assigns you workouts based on your timeline, race goals, etc. aka “coaching” via adaptive training. This is what makes TR valuable, not the workouts itself. Anyone can create VO2 intervals, threshold intervals, etc. It’s for the athletes that don’t want to spend money on a coach, but want to be on a structured training plan.

So what would be the point of copying TR workouts to Zwift? Might as well just use the Zwift workouts. Like others stated, other than the stimulus provided via racing, I don’t really see the value in Zwift unless you like to watch yourself riding in the virtual world.

Is that possible? I don’t want to cancel my TR subscription, as I like the adaptive training, but it would be nice if I can do the workout in Zwift so I can keep increasing my level; I’m at 45 currently.

Similar to above, use TR for training and occasional race in Zwift. I typically have both connected to my Kickr though so that even if I’m following a TR workout I still get the Zwift level ups, route badges, etc. cause why not? With the Kickr you can connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time, just make sure you don’t have Zwift set to Controllable cause then both TR and Zwift are trying to tell your trainer what resistance to set.

It is possible, I do it this way:

TV runs netflixIpad in front of me runs both zwift and TR.Open TR on ipad, pair all sensors, trainer in controlled erg mode.Load workout on TR. Dont pedal.Tap on 3 dots at the top of screen to enter multitasking mode and select side panel mode for TR.Open zwift on ipad. Pair sensors, but your trainer should be as “source of power” and nothing should be in "Controlled trainer"Load whatever world you wanna ride.Open TR back. Zwift will occupy entire screen with TR taking about 1/3 of on the side.Enjoy the ride.I only sync my zwift ride to my garmin connect, strava and trainingpeaks. TrainerRoad ride stays in the TR only.
You can do same on laptop too.
You can’t do same on apple tv. But you can stream your ipad/laptop on apple tv.

Though I typically just use TR, I’ll also use zwift and run TR as an outdoor workout. This works pretty much exactly like it would outside (i.e., you need to pick your terrain). It works really well with certain kinds of workouts, like rolling high tempo intervals, less so with others.

I’ll also just use zwift if it’s just an endurance ride mixing it up between like 50-65% or whatever. Those are harder because I really like to ruin the intended training with those little 10-30 second sprint segments (special jerseys make me feel special).

It is. You can run trainerroad on one device and swift on a second device and have your equipment connect to both simultaneously.
