Trail running - best device to measure

Don’t need anything too fancy…but will low end Garmins measure accurately trails with lots of tree cover? Or do you need high end with high GPS sensitivity? Recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 that does really well in tree cover. (ok, not low end, but I think you can pick it up for less than 250.) I run on trails all the time that have pretty significant tree cover and have always gotten a “good” or better signal quality. I live in New mexico, and I’d say as compared to the trails in my hometown in WI, this is not DENSE FOREST but there are long stretches on these trails that I don’t see much sky at all. (BTW, I love my forerunner. the elevation and distance data are great for trail runs.)

FWIW.

i second the garmin…

Agreed, you will need at least the Garmin Forerunner 205. The 201 or 301 will NOT work in bad reception places. I have the 205 and it works in some pretty amazing places I didn’t expect it to.

My garmin doesn’t do too well on most trails measuring if it’s twisty at all. I rode my bike down a trail with numerous switchbacks, then ran it with my Garmin and my Polar. The Polar and the bike were within 1-2%, the Garmin was almost a mile off (5 mi vs. 6 mi).
