Does anyone know of a good competitive trail race you can do with a dog? We’d prefer one with a canine division. My dog is very competitive and wants to bring home some hardware! A google search doesn’t come up with much, and what does come up are 5K run/walk charity events, and mostly on pavement. We want to race and we want dirt!
By the way, something drivable from southern New England would be perfect.
I’d try to check out local skijor organizations/groups to see if they have any canicross events, b/c that sounds like it would be right up your alley. In my experience of Ontario, there aren’t are a tonne of canicross races/trail races for/with dogs in North America (I could be wrong), but that’s probably your best bet. You could check out http://www.nesdc.org/index.htm - they run skijor events, someone there might know about canicross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canicross).
Well, canicross is just running…I can’t x-country ski to save my life either, but a lot of people do both depending on the season, so I was thinking skijorers might be a good resource to ask about canicross races
.
Now I understand. Canicross seems to be very Euro and UK, but I will try to contact some of the New England mushing clubs and see what happens. Thanks.
Dirty Dog Trail Race in Kanawha State Forest (Charleston, WV). It’s a 15k, very, very demanding course, nothing but dirt, and a fun race. Mid-May 2012. http://www.wvmtr.org/events/dirty-dog-15k-trail-run-2009/ There is a canine division.
