Tour de France/Ironman

Are there any athletes that have competed in a Tour de France and competed in an Ironman? If so was one post retirement from the other or during?

Laurent Jalabert, post retirement.

And Lance, there’s no need to create a fake Slowtwitch ID to troll for information about Ironman. Just look yourself in the mirror and say to yourself “I can do this, I belong”. You will do well, I have confidence in you.

kai hundertmark, post retirement.

if i were doing the tour, i wouldn’t waste my time doing ironmans. one pays the bills, the other doesn’t.

Here he is at Ironman France:

Udo Bolts did both in 2000. Though not at the same time.

Also…

Rolf Aldag, 2006 Ironman Lanzarote 10:22:14 (swim 1:23:18, bike 5:18:05, run 3:27:56) Post-cycling

Udo Boelts 2000 Ironman Hawaii 10:02, good for 39th place overall. His bike split: 4:42. Interview here with him: http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/features/ironman/interviewbolts.html. Did IM during his cycling season/career and the first one to do the Tour/Kona double and finished 74th in the Tour that year.

Nicknamed “Iron Udo”, Bölts also participated in the Hawaii Ironman triathlon in 2000, and finished a very respectable 168th in 10:02:42. Afterwards he described it as rather painful, as he “was practically in a wheelchair during the run”. The problem being that the lack of muscle condition in his legs couldn’t cope with the demands of running a marathon after three weeks preparation.

He did both in the same year, yes.

What happened to the Chicken at Ironman France. I thought he was going to show up? If he could get through the swim, you figure he could actually be pretty good!

There is an Aussie Guy , Nick gates who raced one of the early Ironman Australias in the late 80’s early 90s and has also done TDF , I’ll try and dig up his results for both .

Raptor is that really IM france ??? Looks suspiciously like the Kona coast !!

That Jaja photo above is from Kona last year, aboard the LOOK 496. This year he rode the new 596 in Nice.

At Ironman France, when riding along the Mediterranean sea, it never looks like this picture, at least on the actual course…
sure doesn’t look like la promenade des anglais :stuck_out_tongue:

chann mcrae use to ride postal and did imlp 2004 in 9:25
.

Maybe the first one to do so is one of my friends (and that probably nearly nobody else on this forum has heard of), Mike Gutman. Mike did the Tour de France as a professional cyclist for the team LaVieClaire (or was it Toshiba at the time?), as a domestique for Hinault/LeMond.

He was also one of the most successful swiss triathletes in the 80’s, early 90’s, swiss champion, etc, did Ironmans, including Hawaii too.

Chann did quite a few IM races, including Kona 3x. I he did sub 9h at IM Canada. I am not sure if he ever rode in the Tour, but I think he did.

Tyler Hamilton did Silverman as part of a relay effort.

And a relay is an Ironman right, NOT!

I remember watching Chann in the Giro, back then I was watching on the Italian station RAI (in Italian). This is from Chann McRae’s coaching website cmcoaching.com:

Additionally, the Tour de France website lists him as having one participation in 2000 but not finishing (their historical records search engine is not entirely accurate). I checked Cyclingnews.com and it looks like Chann abandoned on the Mont Ventoux stage in 2000.

I wish I had a picture but Udo did the Kona course wearing full T-Mobile Kit.

I have one somewhere of him checking in his bike the day before.
