Given we are talking an Aeroad and not a cheapo used Craigslist bike will assume budget isn’t an issue.
Moving on from that the only thing I can suggest to anyone is a Varia radar light or similar. Plenty bright amd plenty battery charge for anything I have done. Function first then figure out mounts. Pretty sure they even sell a Garmin rear mount for any aero post now that uses a Boa like on a shoe.
Varia is awesome. After a few years of heavy use, the battery in mine doesn’t hold a charge well anymore so i got the bryton radar, and its also pretty awesome.
Also, to OP, despite what people say about not trusting the garmin varia mount that comes with it with the rubber bands, i have probably >10k miles riding with those, and they work fine, and if i can put one on my cervelo p2, you can put one on the aeroad seatpost
I got 3d printed mounts off etsy for my varia. I’ve got one that holds up to the saddle and one that is on the aero seat post. Yes you can use the elastic straps, but I liked the extra stability of the solid mount.
My favorite non radar light is below. By far the brightest I’ve ever used. When I’m riding with my varia, I have this zip tied to the back of my helmet for extra visibility
Does anyone know if Garmin came out with a warranty response to this, or if it is still an issue with their current models? I got a Varia from my Dad which he used for a few years before hanging up the bikes. I used it most of last year and it was great, but only lasted about 4-5 hours. Now, it wont even turn on after charging.
How is the Bryton? does it work well with the garmin ecosystem like the varia? I may switch based on the past experience.
This is pretty much par for the course with devices that rely upon rechargeable batteries, unfortunately. I haven’t heard of anyone having success getting it covered under warranty.
If you’ve got decent DIY skills, there are third party replacement batteries available from multiple sources, including Amazon and Newegg - Are you a human?
Just fwiw, if you aren’t going to fix the dead one that you have and are just going to throw it away, I’ve been sorta looking for one to take apart. I get asked about battery replacement on these pretty frequently, but I’ve never actually worked on one. It would be nice to actually have some hands on experience to speak from, but my own units just keep on ticking!
Thanks for the reply. I’ve done battery and other component swaps in electronics before so I will look into this and maybe attempt rather than shell out another $150. I didn’t even think about it considering the way garmin builds these to basically not be repairable.
I do a few solo overnight rides on the road bike and am lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree in back. I use the varia every ride, but it doesn’t compare with the other rear lights I use in intensity or duration. I typically put two Omega 330s on the bike, mounted on the seat stays, in addition to the garmin mounted on the seat post. My tri bike is a P3X, so no seat stays. For it, I use the garmin on the seat post and clip an Omega onto a back pocket. In blinking mode, I usually get 12-hours or more out of a charge on the Omegas.
Mount the lights with a 3d printed seat post mount made specifically to fit your seat post. It will look so much nicer and work so much better. Neat-components makes nice mounts or search for others on Etsy, they are much better than the general purpose mounts that come with the lights.
For the Cycliq, search for a Garmin to Cycliq 3d adapter and you will be good to go.
You should ask Garmin. I have asked them twice about head unit batteries not holding charge after some years and both times they sent me a new unit without delay or additional questions (they claimed it was “refurbished” both times, but were in fact new).
I got a varia last fall and it is mounted on a P3 with those flimsy looking bands and the notch they go into does not look particularly deep. I keep worrying it is going come loose. Are there any after market mounts of aero seatposts that anyone can suggest?
I really don’t understand the infatuation with the Varia. The thing beeps all the time. And what would I do differently when it beeps? I don’t understand. They are annoying and make no sense.
I ride with 3 LED taillights. A Bontrager R Flare on the seat post (fits nicely) and two Serfas Thunderbolts on the seat stays. I really can’t imagine a better or safer set up. They last for 5 plus hour rides on high intermittent flash (what you want). I also have a Bontrager 1000 watt on the front.
ST front page showing the Wahoo Trackr radar…Not sure if it will be a good buy or not. Looks like a nice light though…the KOM BOA mount looks like it would work well & adjusts to any post as long as you buy a round, aero, etc. version. 3D printed would be best though I think…hold it more solid & those rubber band holders are quite terrible. They dry out & break.
I think Garmin and others who makes these, coupled with Video, should all have 4K video. 1080 just isn’t clear enough when playing it back. Not sure of the the storage or battery life involved for a long ride–likely high requirements.
Well, if you ride the bike in areas like ours, it is very nice to know whos or whats coming from behind…
I use a Cycplus Radar for 90 Euros, as i think varias are just too expensive and it works as good as varias…
Wahoos approach sells for 200 Euros…i think, this will just be too much…it seems that wahoo will be in deep trouble if tariff stay. As they product in china, too…
Another vote for the Bontrager/Trek Fuse light - it’s perhaps the smallest, but also brightest of the rear red lights (also has a front white one as well). Can hardly tell that you have a light on the bike - but they are bright and powerful, and last a very long time. I mount mine right at the base of my seatpost - on the frame clamp really so it’s completely out of the way!
