i have a localized pain on the top of my foot near the ankle. it does not hurt when running or cycling. it almost feels like a bruise but does not bother me when exercising. if i unclip my foot and “shake it out” on the bike it will hurt. or if i flex my foot downward all the way it will occasionally hurt. i have been icing 3-4 times per day. like i said its a very localized spot and i can make it hurt by pushing on it, but its not like pass out type of pain.
just keep icing and rest or is it something to get checked out?
Quite possible it’s caused by tying your shoes too tightly - I’m serious - two weeks ago I had a shoe tied too tightly while I ran, and it resulted in pain on the top of my foot near the ankle… kinda where the bunny ears are on the shoes but to the left of it. The next morning it was all swolled. I had a doctor I work with look at it under ultrasound for me: inflammed tibialis anterior tendon and a whole bunch of fluid trapped under the tendon sheath. FROM HAVING A FREAKIN SHOELACE TIED TOO TIGHTLY. It hasn’t gone away on it’s own so tomorrow they’re draining it and injecting some cortisone in there…
yours sounds similar, with the pain with flexion/extension.
Actually, when I saw the title of the thread, that was the first thought in my mind was shoes tied too tightly, which in turn caused some inflammation/injury right under where the knot/cross was.
i agree that was most likely the cause. i have those spiffy specialized road shoes that have the boa lacing to get extra tight for time trials/hill climbs etc.
so it shouldn’t be a problem to continue training on it…just leave laces loose and keep on icing?

Pretty much. They might need to be a titch looser than you might like while you’re still rehabbing it, and if it just seems to persist, have it checked out.
You did mention a very focal area of pain and that always raises the red flag for a stress fracture (but unlikely here). I also use the same Specialized Boa shoes and they can be cranked down pretty hard, so that is definitely a real possibility of entrapment neuropathy or even causing a ganglion like Tigerchick.
I am better now, calming down… my heart rate spiked when the doctor took needles out. Lucky me though, I had Chris, the nurse-practitioner who’s been taking care of me there for moral support and talked me right through it. Novocaine shot… then they drained all the fluid… cortisone shot.
So I looked at Chris and said “is the bump on my foot gone?”
“Nope.”
“WHAT?!”
“Well, he just drained all the fluid from it, then injected cortison. Now you’ve got a little bump of cortisone.”
I was caught between tears and laughter…
and, it turns out the knee achiness is “jumpers knee” and the doctor told me just to keep stretching my hip flexors (the left one, same leg as the affected knee, is tighter than the right) and ice my knee after activity… but that I can get back to swim bike run. I have another appointment next week to see if just the stretch/icing will get that to go away.
Which basically means I can start training again, and now I’m terrified of doing it and just getting hurt again.
Go see a good chiropractor. They can help you more than a shot of novacaine. The shot will help kill the pain temporarily, but if you don’t address the true cause then it will never get better.
If it is indeed your shoes, try to resolve that first…
However, if it persists, I suggest you go see a chiro… they can adjust the foot, do therapies on it, and check your posture and gait…
all can/will disrupt the gait and thus the foot pain
Cheers
if you are talking to me: the “true cause” was having a shoelace tied too tightly. Kind of a freak thing to cause so much trouble, but it should be ok.
my foot is finally feeling better after loads of ice and keeping my shoes loose. it seems to actually work better to run with moderately loose laces, but i do prefer my cycling shoes tight for time trialing…ill have to wait a few weeks to gain back those extra watts!

Been a long time, but… Have you gotten completely over the ankle pain?
