Aha! I knew I wasn’t the only one who noticed this not-so-subtle social phenomena.

In short, we have what the anthropologist Leslie Aiello called “paleofantasies.” She was referring to stories about human evolution based on limited fossil evidence, but the term applies just as well to nostalgia for the very old days as a touchstone for the way life is supposed to be and why it sometimes feels so out of balance.

The paleo diet has been embraced by urban hipsters. A trend has surely lost its edginess once that’s happened. What to do now? Oh, I feel so ordinary now. I must be different so I can resume looking down on people but have no accomplishments of my own to base my smugness upon. Perhaps some kind of phagocytosis diet?
Joe Friel (might of heard of him), Mark Sisson, Dr. Loren Cordain, Brad Kearns, Jonas Colting (Pro Triathlete), … Quite the gang of urban hipsters.
Oh yeah, read The Primal Blueprint, and The Paleo Diet For Athletes… both cite dozens of peer reviewed documented studies. Friel has never been a bandwagoner.
And it’s OK. Let’s agree to disagree. I’ve done enough “in the trenches” research with dozens of clients to know what works… the results don’t lie. Now get you a big glass of skim milk and some granola and go train! Hahaha… this is fun.
“in the trenches research” is anecdotal bull…still not one article quoted…i hope your “clients” have been given some real scientific evidence…
Yes they have. And they’re all ecstatic with their results as am I. They’re all happy how lean they are, how well there health numbers are, and how well they’re racing. Yes… we’re all doing awesome. Thanks for asking. When you train a couple thousand “clients” over a 17 year coaching career as I have then let’s talk. Have a lovely day there Mr. happy. Maybe a change in your diet will help you with your cranky, bitter demeanor? But then you’re the real pro here. We’re all just living in a state of delusion.
Not a pro…just like my action to be based on scientific facts…and by the way…i train with plenty of people who have good “health numbers” (what is that?? more mumbo jumbo) and are lean and fit…we all love our grains and milk… its funny how you cant get away from your anecdotal experience…just be a scientist and quote me a real study showing that your not taking advantage of the willing…
Dude? What is your deal? Health numbers: I’ll explain it to you like you’re a 4-year-old. Blood sugar, blood pressure, LDL/HDL, lipids, RHR, etc. All improved. I also gave you two books that back up all their findings with scientific evidence. A local library card and www.google.com will get you all the research you need. And I love how you skip around Friel. How is it that the most heralded triathlete and cycling coach of a generation… is ON-BOARD with paleolithic nutrition? Call Joe and tell him he’s just taking advantage of his clients. That accusation is absurd at best. Even you must have a dog-eared copy of “The Triathlete’s Training Bible” around. I, as well as many of my clients, suffered from joint distress, elevated markers, and a desire to get leaner while improving athletic performance. When I removed dairy my training improved. When I removed gluten… it was dramatic… since going to a more hunter-gatherer (if you will) approach, I have never been leaner, fitter, healthier, and more vibrant than I am now at 41 years old. I have also seen similar improvements in my clients. So I could take time out of my work day and dig up or sift through the mountains of research, or you could open your mind a bit and simply look into an approach that differs from the conventional. Who knows… it may have the same results it did for me and change your life and training for the better. If not… then at least you were able to look at another popular approach to health and athletic improvement . I’ve answered your questions and all you can be is rude and mean. Relax, go for a run or something… and have a nice day.
