ive read the same studies…i have friends who have said they have seen this in their body over time, not huge, but slight increase in the man boob.
my soy intake is significant, and i have no issues, but i think as many on here, when you work out like crazy it doesnt matter.
The easy tests are looking to see if you’re getting man boobs (storing fat at your pec or high hamstring), which is an indicator that your body has too much estrogen, which is what soy affects (why it causes man boobs).
Some people do fine with soy. But personally, I wouldn’t take it. I have a bit of soy sauce on my weekly sushi, but that’s it.
Oh yeah, one other reason not to eat soy - 96% (IIRC) of all soybeans grown in the US are Monsanto GMO beans. If there is a company more deserving of a boycott, I can’t think of it…

i agree, also, most of the soybeans, corn, wheat, etc…grown in the u.s., is fed to animals, so i guess we lower that meat consumption too.
non gmo tofu and soy is easy to find.
being against genetic modified foods is kind of insane. its like 1 part senseless and 1 part impossible.
being against monsanto is not. they are a dirtbag company for sure.

I consume no soy, gluten, corn, dairy, or legumes. When I made this change I dropped 22lbs. of body-fat and my performance and health boosted significantly as well as stopped my joint pain and inflammation in its tracks. I get all my carbs from veggie and fruit sources along with sweet potatoes. Grass-fed Lean meats, eggs, fish, poultry, and whey. Nuts , seeds, and lots of good fats. Pretty much a modern-day “hunter-gatherer” approach.
And to get to the point… yes… over abundance of soy will elevate estrogen in men…

I’m curious, how much do you spend each week on groceries?
The potency of phytoestrogens in humans is extremely low. They have a very minimal effect however consumption of soy products in asian countries has been linked to decreased rates of prostate cancer.
Does anyone have a link to a research paper showing a link between dietary phytoestrogens and gynecomastia?
Here is one case report. This guy drank 3 quarts of soy milk each day.
An unusual case of gynecomastia associated with soy product consumption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To document a case of gynecomastia related to ingestion of soy products and review the literature. METHODS: We present the clinical course of a man with gynecomastia in relation to ingestion of 2 different soy products and review related literature. RESULTS: A 60-year-old man was referred to the endocrinology clinic for evaluation of bilateral gynecomastia of 6 months’ duration. He reported erectile dysfunction and decreased libido. On further review of systems, he reported no changes in testicular size, no history of testicular trauma, no sexually transmitted diseases, no headaches, no visual changes, and no change in muscular mass or strength. Initial laboratory assessment showed estrone and estradiol concentrations to be 4-fold increased above the upper limit of the reference range. Subsequent findings from testicular ultrasonography; computed tomography of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis; and positron emission tomography were normal. Because of the normal findings from the imaging evaluation, the patient was interviewed again, and he described a daily intake of 3 quarts of soy milk. After he discontinued drinking soy milk, his breast tenderness resolved and his estradiol concentration slowly returned to normal. CONCLUSIONS: This is a very unusual case of gynecomastia related to ingestion of soy products.
Here is some asshat saying soy makes your son gay:

Gives a new meaning to being a “boob man”
.
well that is a lot of things you avoid
we are going to need years to narrow down which of those changes caused you to lose weight and not have inflammation anymore.
or maybe you just needed to reduce your caloric intake? Being 22lbs lighter does wonders for injury prevention when running a lot.
also whey is dairy =)

Years? No… Not even close. A little simple research will clear up alot for you.
Whey is the bi-product of dairy and is lactose free. Gluten and dairy, along with legumes cause joint inflammation. My caloric intake barely changed… I’ve been a fitness and nutrition geek my whole life. That’s how I feed my kids and pay the bills. Read “The Paleo Diet for Athletes” as a start. Some guy named Joe Friel co-wrote it… I think he has some involvement in the multisport community?

I buy my beef from a local farmer… $2 a pound and get it by the cow, split it with a few clients.
Chicken and eggs are cheap… as is veggies and fruits at the farmers market. I don’t spend as much as others do on all their fancy gels, boxed processed crap etc. Just gotta do a little homework.
How much of this is motivated by the need to feel smug?
BTW, I lost 50 lbs eating some of the worst junk food available, just less of it.

I’m smug because I eat well and focus on my nutrition as much as my training?? Huh? Really? So I should just eat less crap instead of eating healthy? Wow. For a second I thought you were serious… you got me!
yeah quit being such a jerkface!!!
=)

I’d keep an eye on that “cheese” you put on your pizza. Scary.

Somebody already wrote the book on this. LOL
"For Andrew Potter, the ever-narrowing search for just the right kind
of food has less to do with saving the environment or pursuing a
healthy lifestyle than with achieving a certain self-image, one in
which the tawdry, consumerist aspects of modern life are thrown over
for the sake of a simpler, truer, more “authentic” self. Food is only
one part of that broader self-definition. In “The Authenticity Hoax,”
Mr. Potter notes that the search for authenticity often ends up as a
status-seeking game.
Authenticity, Mr. Potter writes, is “a positional good, which is
valuable precisely because not everyone can have it.” By competing
against one another to see who is more authentic, he says, we just
become bigger phonies than we were before. The local-food trend
illustrates what Mr. Potter calls “conspicuous authenticity,” by which
the well-heeled embark on a “perpetual coolhunt,” whether it is for
authentic jeans, pristine vacation spots or mud flooring, part of the
“natural building” movement. The overarching goal is less to possess
the thing itself than to make a claim to refined taste and moral
superiority."
