Toes getting smashed from Hoka Conquest

I love my Hokas but the toe next to my pink toe on my right foot is black and blue after a 1 hour run. I have inserts and my feet do not seem to be moving around so I am stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

RB

Try a size up. They’re too small with your inserts.

Do you have the new ones with the plastic tongue? -I’m having the same problem with the Bondi 3s. I just took off another toe nail. The Bondi 2s were perfect and I ran in them for 6 months… I think that, with the newer models, even if the shoe seems to fit, it moves ever so slightly because the plastic, thin tongue slips, making it lose enough to cause your toe to bang against the front. I hope that they put the older style tongues back into the next models. I’ve done 6 short-medium runs in the Bondi 3s and I’m not going to wear them any more

Sounds like you may need to size up. Sometimes, tinkering around with your lacing can help keep your foot in the back of your shoes.

yep, must be the plastic tongue, I took the laces out because they do not really work. Thanks

This is not a slight at Hoka, I’ve run in them and they’re a fine shoe but if you can you might want to try on an Altra Olympus. Much more toe box room and lots of cushion

A few things to look at:

  1. 1/2 size up: ideally if you can test it out at a shop with your inserts before buying.
  2. Laces: I’m about to cut mine out and go with a different quick lace that I can tie tighter at the toe box (lots of room there for me). I like Xtenex.
  3. Socks: Some socks are thicker than others, try going to a thinner sock that would create more room.
  4. Foot strike: If you’re shuffling or swinging your foot forward it might be causing you feet to shift forward in the shoe. Just make sure you’re not scuffing the shoe (shoe slides on the ground before weight is applied, scuffing the front of the shoe or heel). You may need to lift your foot up higher to have a more effective foot strike so your foot doesn’t shift forward.

Hope it helps! I bought the Conquest a few weeks ago, so far they are awesome, just need to replace the laces.

The problem with Hoka’s is that they have a narrow toe box.

The Conquest continues the narrow pattern, and adds the unfortunate stiffer plastic around the metatarsophalangeal joints & stiffer sole. Sure, this combo offers more mechanical responsiveness, but it’s not good for proper foot biomechanics. Adding inserts means that the shoe is going to fit even narrower. With my Conquests, I had to remove the insole AND stretch the toe box in order to remove discomfort. If I hadn’t already made several runs with my Conquests I would send them back. My Stinson Tarmacs are reasonably wide and the cloth material stretched out a bit.

I wish Hoka would learn that the human foot is supposed to be a triangle–getting wider from heel to tip of the toes. The reason why most peoples feet are not this way is because they’ve been wearing shoes that push the toes in.

Topo Athletic’s MT and ST are the best shoes I’ve had on my feet. Unfortunately, since ankle reconstruction my right foot/ankle/leg aren’t ready yet for making the MT my standard running shoe.

Also, be slightly aware that more toe box does not necessarily mean more room where you need it. The Altras seem to add more room on the big toe side with very little extra on the smaller toe side. This seems to be a trend which is a bit perplexing because people always seem to have issues with the smaller rather than big toe. Either that or I am skewing the view to suit my own issue.

I had a similar issue. I felt that although the shoes have a lot of cushion, they don’t bend at the toes to allow extension of your toes, so the tips compress into the shoe more. I love the concept of the extra cushion, they just didn’t work for my anatomy (not just this issue).

You’re 100% correct. The shape of the last has to work for your foot. Dunno why some manufacturers are just enlarging the medial toe box. And something to keep in mind is that there can be issues with big and small toes because the shoe is too narrow around the metatarsophalangeal joints (joints between toes and foot).
