Today's feel bad message - women of Barbie get snubbed, but not the men

Yes, the very nature of sports is competition. But that is why a game ends with a winner and loser. Why is there another level to determine best? In part because it makes us strive for excellence or greatness. Why do athletes care about the Hall of Fame?

No, that is not the nature of film making or music. It is creativity, an expression, and a form of art. But at the end of the day, a construct to have formal acknowledgement of greatness exists. Do actors/actresses choose roles that may be Oscar worthy? I say yes. Would Ben Affleck and Matt Damon or Gwenyth Paltrow have the subsequent careers they are having without their Oscar? I say no.

And then all of this gets wrapped up into our culture. The escape from reality, and the desire to ogle the celebrities that provide this. I take your points. I am just saying it doesn’t baffle me that people care and we participate.

But awards shows exist. Why do we have playoffs at the end of a sports season? I enjoy watching sports for the actual enjoyment of watching the game. And I can enjoy a good game for what it is, and be annoyed at a bad game.

In art, this is sort of their version of competition. It is imperfect for sure, and can seem a bit silly, But at the end of the day, it is a way to demonstrate exceptional. I mean, I know you appreciate this. You critique movies.

We have playoffs at the end of sports seasons, because the very nature of sports is competition. That’s not the very nature of making films.

We watch and get upset or excited at sports because we can see the score and tell a winner, even with subjectively judged sports.

The same can not be said for films, yet people watch and discuss and wait for the nominee announcements, and talk about snubs, and talk about what they wear, and, and, and…

Like I said, it baffles me a bit.

I completely agree. I’ve never been a fanboy of anyone since I was 10 years old and was within arms reach of Pele. So the mere notion of modern celebrities and the status society gives them is frustrating to me. Its all superficial highlighted by, as you said, the fawning over what outfits they wear.

I’ve always thought the critics look at movies completely differently than the average consumer. Movies are for entertainment. There are countless movies that are classics or loved by many that were ripped apart by the critics. Much like cooking, I’m sure I could have a meal prepared by an amazing chef that is beyond anything Ive ever tasted but that the elite chefs would have completely different standards and probably turn their noses to it.

Best way to decide what film is the best picture? Kinda easy to me: whichever brought in the most money.

Sounds like a better way to decide the picture with the biggest names, the most recognizable franchise affiliation and biggest marketing budget. I appreciate the best picture nominations because it leads to really good films that aren’t hammering me over the head with promotion.

Are you more inclined to see a film because the actors or director has won academy awards? I can honestly say I don’t know the vast majority of people’s award status when deciding to watch or not watch their films. It has no impact on those choices whatsoever. It simply doesn’t matter to me.

I could list ten of my favorite actors and I couldn’t pin one award on their prior performances assuming they’ve won them. It’s off my radar.

I mean I was only half serious because theres no way to decide what “best” actually means. I understand the Academy has their own requirements and its their show after all. But they are subjective criteria for best picture aside from their theatrical release requirements.

Well, in general no. Not so much and actor or actress. I agree. But don’t you think agents have this in the back of their mind for the top level talent they represent? Don’t you think studios seek out and contracts negotiations are swayed by this?

For Director, I would say that likely influences. When someone says Peter Jackson, visceral response. He has earned clout. I immediately sought out the Beatles documentary when I saw he did it. Oliver Stone and Scorsese are Mount Rushmore because of it. When Clint Eastwood makes a film, immediate consideration.

See my reply to Thom. Although “best” is decided against four categories of which the film need only satisfy two for consideration and they are purely subjective. I was making a casual and only half serious comment about an objective method to simplify the process. I understand why that is not practical for a number of reasons.

Agents definitely have it in mind, and use it to ge more money for their clients. A bit of a self licking ice cream cone.

People watch things that have Peter Jackson attached to it because they saw the LOTR movies and liked them, not because LOTR did or didn’t win awards.

Exactly.

I don’t know if Jackson won an Oscar (or several) for the LOTR series but I enjoyed the films at the time. Similarly, Martin Scorcese–I love gangster movies and he does them well, and uses actors in those roles that I like to watch. I don’t know which films he’s won awards for, or if Joe Pesci won awards for any of his Scorcese roles, but put those two together and I’m watching whatever they put on film.

Even more so for Grammys. Did anyone buy a Jethro Tull album over Metallica because of an award? Probably. But those people are idiots.

People like music because they like music. I have never listened or bought something because of an award. But Taylor Swift exploded and crossed over from country to mega pop with the assistance of awards and then live performances at those shows. She is uber talented and a machine. But you don’t think early on that gave her momentum? I remember knowing her, and then she performed You Belong with Me with a High School Marching band on one of those shows, can remember which, and it was wild. And she cleaned up.

One final thought, then it is bed time. I love shows, because will catch a performance that will give me new appreciation. It’s not the award, it’s the event.

I remember seeing this, and will go back to watch from time to time. Look at Mick move!

And then Gaga, at the Oscars performing Sound of Music prior to introducing Julie Andrews. Was great.

Kanye’s beef with her (and the songs she wrote in response) didn’t hurt things either

Was the Oscars on recently. Did I miss anything?

Nominations were announced

To steal from the “100/100” thread, this is the “Airing Of Grievances” before the Event
.

I will point out Spielberg got a Director nod for West Side Story, which was adapted.

I didn’t say if you adapt a screenplay that it means you can’t get nominated for directing.

Just because someone directs something good doesn’t mean that they were a good director. As I said above, it appears that the academy thought she was a top 5 adapted screenplay writer, but not a top 5 director.

I’ve never bought a Metallica album. I own 16 Tull albums.

Nothing to do with Tull winning that Grammy. I’m an idiot for other reasons.

What? Peter Jackson directed LOTR?!

I thought he was popular and acclaimed for Meet the Feebles.
