Tires for training? Which ones?

Probikekit has 10% off and I thought about picking up some new training tires. I have never had good luck using Prorace3’s as a training tire and have alsways used Conti’s 4000’s. I am trying save some $$$ on training tires. What else should I look at for training?

twin packs
Conti Gatorskins -$65
Conti GP 4000s $83
About Michlin ProRace3 $70
Vittoria Rubino Pro- $55

I currently run Gatorskins and they’ve treated well, though I can feel the slight drag because of the kevlar lining. A lot of people have recommended the Conti GP 4000s, though I’ve never tried it personally. If you’re really trying to to save, I would save to go with the Gatorskins as they are a great value.

Michelin Krylion is the Honey Badger of tires. Wears forever and grips really well.

x2. Those are spectacular tires, IMO. But if you want cheaper and still pretty good, I ended up getting Lithion 2’s from PB for a great price (2 for $30 I think).

Gatorskin.

The extra weight is great for training, and you get some extra tire protection. I definitely notice the added weight compared to a light tire - the first time I put them on, I was like 'WTF happened to my bike?!" Good for training, though.

I like Vittoria Zaffiros or Michelin Krylion/Kromion. Can’t go wrong with the Rubino though it will wear faster than the Zaffiros.

I’m in a similar position, but have one other factor to consider. I’d like something that not only has good flat protection and wears well, but also grips well in the rain. Would that change anyone’s recommendation?

I love 4000’s especially over Prorace3’s due to the extra puncture protection but I hate the fact they are $90 a set.

I’ve used Gatorskins for the last 2 or 3 years. So far, so good.

I recently decided to try something besides the GP4K’s for training, bought the Swalbe Durano’s from probikekit. $70/ pr. So far am very happy with them. Seem to be a decent compromise between durability, price and rolling resistance.

+1…super durable, my flat incidents have gone waaaaay down since riding these

went with the lithion pair on pbk thats already on sale for $41 less another 10%
.

Conti GP 4000 S, period.

I was a 4000s fan until a piece of metal slashed the hell out of my rear tire 60mi from home. I used Gatorskins now, no issues and you can beat the hell out of them. Plus when you switch to a race setup you are that much faster.

I purchase cheap, durable, slow tires for training. Last time I found some that were $9 a tire on Nashbar/Performance.

Can’t go wrong with the Gatorskins, the price is right, they last and are better than average for punctures, the weight & roll-resist works for you in training
.

If like me you dont care about loosing a bit of speed in training, 25mm Gatorskins currently getting 4 - 5,000km out of a rear double that for front. Had one flat in about 12,000km since I started using them.

Michelin Krylion

or anything with excellent flat protection so you can worry about training and not as much about fixing flats
