Enve recommends 28mm or bigger tires. Here are the tires (tubeless) I am considering:
Conti GP5000 25c
Conti GP5000 28c
Schwalbe Pro One 25c
Schwalbe Pro One 28c
What do the ST aero/rolling resistance experts say?
PS: they are going onto a 2019 Venge for draft-legal triathlon races. The bike has clearance for up to 30 or possible bigger tires.
From those options you’re down to using the Schwables because Enve has specifically prohibited the Conti 5000 TL. This is because the 4.5AR rim is hookless. I think Conti also warns against using the 5000 TL on hookless rims.
I’ve been running the Schwable Pro One 28c for the last two seasons and have had good luck with them. I wish I could run the new Contis, but this is my second set of 4.5AR’s after the first exploded from failed rim tape. So I’m not screwing around with anything they specifically prohibit (tho I’d not have a problem running latex (enve prohibits) tubes if I wasn’t running tubeless).
Never mind, I just saw the compatibility chart. That’s really surprising. I know a lot of people are running the 4.5AR with the GP5K TL. I wonder how risky that is.

it’s not surprising… read the side of the 5000TL… it literally says do not use on hookless rims so it’s not just ENVE suggesting
I have 5000TL’s 28 on Roval CLX50
I have Pro-1 28 on Enve 4.5AR
personally I would not chance it with the conti. Honestly they both feel really fast…my climb times are all within a few seconds of each other with power within a few watts of each other. The both feel good in the corners. I’ve ridden the Schwalbes in the rain with no issues, but have not been in the rain with the 5000TL’s yet. Comfort wise I give the edge to the schwalbes… which end up about a mil wider in width on the 4.5AR.
I understand ENVE recommends 28, but given the Schwalbes tend to fit wider, I think I might give that a shot. I believe ENVE recommends 28mm or wider for optimal aero, not for safety concerns. Am I correct?
I have a new set of enve 4.5AR and am running pro one 28mm. They measure our to 32 at 50psi I run them at. Both wheels and tires are an amazing combo and wouldn’t ride anything else.

I do think that is true… but dont forget max pressure is 80psi…
So I mounted the Pro One 25c tubeless, they measured to over 29.5mm with tire pressure 60psi, so it seems like they are the ideal aero profile (rim/tire width ratio of 105%). Did a couple of quick rides, they felt really fast and comfy. I think I will stick with them for a while and see how it goes.
BTW, I heard the Pro One 28c measures to over 31mm when mounted to these rims, so it would seem to be less ideal aero-wise, but I guess Crr trumps aero.
Not to hijack the thread, but what are you general opinions on the Roval CLX 50 and Enve 4.5 AR. How was setting up tubeless on each?
The are both fast… I don’t have the same tires on them so I cant apples to apples.
CLX50- 28MM 5000TL- Roval hubs
ENVE - 28MM Schwalbe Pro-One- Industry9 Classic
Roval are a smidge lighter. (sans tires) maybe 40g
Enve’s handle cross winds a lot better… front is a little less deep on Enves… but I think it goes beyond that, they are better
Comfort… could be the tires and the wide hookless rims… but edge to Enve.
Roval were easier to setup tubeless… Enve’s where not hard… but Rovals were stupid easy with 5000TL
Enve’s bummer is lack of tire choices and it is a bummer.
If I could only keep one… it would be the Enve’s… despite the lack of tire choices because I honestly like the Pro-One’s so far.
