Tired? or on verge of fitness breakthrough?

Any one have bad training weeks latelyweeks? This week has just been awful. I ran a 4 mile race last Friday, felt great. But this week just sucks. Feeling tired and not motivated.

I took last weekend off becasue of personal things so I had plenty of time to “recover”. Doubtful that I am overtrained, but I feel like shit. I have heard from numerous folks, that **when you feel at your worst you are on the verge of a breakthrough to a new level of fitness (assuming that there are no injuries). **

Anyone ever have this experience?

Thanks!

Fran

I’ve felt bagged all week. Really tired after lunch. I think I’ve been overdoing it a bit. Heck, I’m no spring chicken anymore. Took a couple of days of this week for rest and I feel better now.

I thought training was going great. I was in my early season base work . I decided to go do a road race with my daughter. It HIT the wall at it. Then felt tired all week . Raced a sprint the next week end and was 5 min slower than the year before. (5 MIN.) !!!

Now I am second guessing myself. Trying to decide if I need more training or to take time off. I feel tired, down, unmotivated! I hope it goes away soon.

After the race where I had a poor swim (500 yards) I swam 2 days later repeat 500’s and swam all 1 min-45 sec. faster than at the race ???

I have never experienced a breakthrough after being really tired. I have learned (am learning) to listen to those signs from my body. I have gone through those weeks and somtimes time off helps, sometimes changing the routine a bit, sometimes just arranging my schedule so I can get more sleep for few days. Sometime I think it is more mental than physical?

This winter I had a week I was feeling tired and tried to keep my schedule. I Attempted some intervals one day and knew something was wrong (heart rate way off, couldn’t hold the pace) and 2 days later had a full on cold which lasted about 10 days, so now I lighten up a little when I feel like that. I figure better to give up a day or to shorten workouts then risk illness or injury.

Does it ever occur to any of you type A guys to knock it off for a bit?

Dan had a great article on this site about a year ago. He titled it Closed for Remodeling or something like that.

Learn from your elders.

Down time? Well maybe, I might be able to take some time off, That could help,

NAW!!!

I have had a breakthrough- I am a lazy slob.

Seriously- listen to your body. If you feel like crap, there’s a good reason to just go with it and slack for the week.

AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

No.

Seriously, I’ve always considered feeling tired like this a sign that my body was using energy to try to build itself back up. A light training week may be in order, and some extra sleep, plus some extra good nutrition.

I find a 3 or 4 hour nap on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to be almost magical when I’m feeling run down.

Brings me right back to feeling human again.

Sounds like you are overcooked. The only time I have had a training breakthrough after feeling sluggish during multiple training sessions is when I had a decent taper prior (1 to 2 wks). Two possible reasons for you:

  1. you may not have recovered from the 4 mile race which would be dependent on the amount of fast running you did before and/or how hard you ran.

  2. your immune system may be wearing down.

Having one of those weeks right now, did a short bike Mon. felt ok, did a swim on tues, couldn’t get out of bed on wed, no motivation. Bagged wed workout napped instead. Been having sugar and fat cravings, gave in to the fat and toughed out the sugar. Went on short bike today and turned back early with a mechanical problem. Been eating good food today I feel better, will probably try my swim workout tomorrow. The wed. off and a little junk food made me feel lots better.

Have you increased your calorie intake along with your training? You could be short on energy cuz of what you have been eating. I know it is a pain to log what you eat but try it for a few weeks and see if you can find a trend. Sleep is another important part of performance and recovery too.
