Tire wear and Iron distance racing

Quick question. I usually don’t really sweat the wear on my tires too much, but I have my first Iron distance (and maybe last for awhile) in a month and I was wondering how many of you put on new tires for an full distance event? FWIW, the Conti GP4000s I’m running now have about 700 miles on them. Thanks!

You should be able to get 2500 miles in those tires, at least thats my experience. At 700 miles wear shouldn’t be an issue, but check them very closely for damage which could cause an issue during the race. If you see anything suspicious, then put on new ones…you can always put the originals back on after the race and save the race day tires for your next big race or when the originals wear out.

you’ve invested hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours getting to the IM start. Don’t be cheap, put race tires on.

I didn’t for IMC this year (left what look like a perfectly serviceable pair of specialized pro’s on). Turned out there was a weak spot and blew a 1" whole in the rear tire at about mile 80. 20 minutes waiting for race support.

You have spent months getting ready for a race and you are asking a question about your tires. Go get your bike tuned up and replace the tires. Always get your equipment checked before your peak race. It amazes me to see such expensive bike gear poorly maintained at races. Do not leave anything to chance .

If you are even thinking about it get some new tires. While at 700 miles they are likely fine, you can at least take this opportunity to get some better rolling tires while you are at it.

You’ve just about worn the new off those tires. Ride 'em!

2 camps I see! Well, I just found a great deal on that tire, so I guess better safe than sorry.
