Tire question for an old Trek speed concept

I’ve got a 2011 Trek speed concept with bontrager aeolus wheels that are 65 mm deep and 21 mm wide. Based on the 105% rule I should only be racing with 20 mm tires. But that goes against a lot of the newer data on wider tires and rims. However, the clearance on these bikes isn’t very good and I can’t fit my zipp 808s on the bike.

Any advice on what my options are would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

808 firecrests? Why can’t you fit them?

Yes there is. I ran 808 firecrests (and a super 9) on that bike for years. You might need to adjust the brakes to get additional clearance. The front is relatively easy. The back requires a little more finesse.

You can adjust the brakes.

Same, I ran the 404/808 FCs on my first gen SC no problem. I ran a 24mm on the rear with the Conti Force/Attack tires.

FYI, the finesse Steve mentions above for the rear brake is that spacing is adjusted by moving washer spacers from behind the pad holder to the outside of the caliper (to open it up and reverse for reducing width). It is quick and easy, but can be challenging without an extra set of hands.

A set of the Bontrager Race XXX Lite brake levers with the adjustment dial built in works great. Once set up I could swap in my Super 9 and 808 NSW race wheels for 404 training wheels without needing to screw with the washers.

Those were handy. I had them too. Then lost them when I installed Di2 shifters:(

Question for all the aerodynamic specialists. Is an 808 too deep for a front wheel? I have the bontrager aeolus 65 mm on there now but it’s only a 21 mm.

I don’t know the exact weights for comparison. But just holding them in my hands. The zip 808 is definitely a little heavier too.
