Any recommendations for a bike tire pump for a tri bike? I am absolutely horrendous at filling up my tires with air - I’ve also wondered a manual pump vs. electric with a digital reading?
Any floor pump works great.
I like my Joe Blow. I’ve had it for nearly 15 years without being disappointed.
Silca with a Hiro chuck here. Digital gauge. Nice pump but pricey.

WTF does that even mean?

Ha! Good question. Every time I attempt to fill up my tires with air, I end up actually letting air out and they go flat.
What he said above. The Hiro chuck is the best chuck on the planet. Silca is top tier and worth it.

+1 on the Joe Blow.
It’s a mid-priced pump that works great.
I have a Lezyne (and get the dual presta/schaeder head…the supplied screw-on head is a pain). Great looking/performing pumps with durable metal construction, a classy, retro aesthetic; and the option of analog or digital gauges. $2X the Topeak though.
On the over-the-top end is the Silca pump. Stupid expensive, stupid nice. Perfect if you already own the Campy corkscrew.

I just got one of the Lezyne “Sport†floor pumps. It’s the “Gravel†model (good for up to 100psi) with a large, easy-to-read analog dial gauge. The supplied “tubeless†chuck (different, I think, from the chuck that comes on a “road†model) has been great for presta valves so far (haven’t tried it on any schraeder valves yet). It’s in the price range of a Joe Blow. I actually got mine for under $50 on sale. I especially like that there are replacement parts available, including internals.

How do you do that?
this trek bontrager one is awsome i love the high pressure or high volume switch and the big air pressure dial.

I tried several and Bontrager pump is good. Keep in mind these two things.
- Buy one with the gauge on top. It’s hard to see when you pump before the race because most of the time it’s damn dark.
- Buy one with the holder for the handle. If one doesn’t have it, it’s bitch to carry because the handle keeps coming out.
Just listen to me and you will be happy.
I use the ‘big blue’ pump or something with an equally ridiculous name from Performance (or Nashbar). Must be going for 15+ years. Works great, never needed replacement parts. Super cheap and it does not suck - it blows! 😀

My solution is Hiro chuck screwed into the lezyne screw on head - makes it look clunky but works a dream.

Another vote for this setup. The Hiro chuck is incredible, and the digital pump is crazy accurate. As Josh states, you spend how much money on wheels and tires and use a $40 pump to inflate them? Not much accuracy there…Last pump you’ll ever need.

The Hiro chuck is nuts expensive, but honestly completely worth it, as you will be using it every single time you ride if you are keeping on top of tire pressures. If you have a disc wheel, it’s pretty much required.
I’d go so far as to say that attaching the Hiro chuck to ANY floor pump will instantly make it essentially the best, easiest to use pump out there. The Hiro chuck fits on any Schrader valve (the Hiro fits presta valves, but fits on Schraders, I believe.)
It’s great - flip that little toggle, and you are instantly inflating. No muss, no fuss, no leaks. I wished I’d gotten this thing years ago, as it would have saved me all those moments where air wasn’t quite fully going into the tire and i spent a bunch of time messing with it (over and over again.)

I am 99% sure I got mine for about half price off the silca website in a fairly regular sale - I’m half remembering it perhaps came without a box/bag.
But honestly, in the list of cycle / triathlon related things that I’ve spent a lot of money on over the last 25 years the hiro chuck doesn’t get a vague look-in on the top 100. The Lezyne carbon bike pump for my road bike for example is something that my LBS still mocks me for when I go in 3 years later (I got them to order it for me, so I feel that they are on thin ice here, but that’s the way we roll in the odd world of Kiwi bike shop customer service ).

I think even a high roller has to admit that a freaking bike pump chuck at $70 is expensive. Especially when you can get an entire super high quality metal bike pump for less than that.
And I’ll STILL say it’s worth it, especially as it saves time every time you use it. I have a really good Lezyne pump, but the Hiro on that or my cheaper pump is significantly superior in all regards. The lezyne is great ones it’s screwed on, but it can be a real headache to screw it on right, and you still have to worry about unscrewing the core…with the Hiro, it’s literally turn the lever a bit, and you’re done. If it’s not on exactly right, it’s a cinch to reposition. Really great piece of kit. But expensive!

Yes, I do. I mean this seriously as I think this is an example of I don’t know what I don’t know. But, my Joe blow pump works fine. No issues, reliable. I can’t really attest to accuracy of gauge but I don’t have a reason to doubt it. Which specific model do you recommend? What does it do that a “standard†pump does not or what does it do better?
Other than for pumping up a tube on a disc wheel, what is the purpose or how would you use the Hiro chuck?

It’s like driving an Audi or Merc vs a Nissan. They all do the same job, but it just ‘feels’ more solid and pleasant.
I don’t have a disc wheel, so for me the ‘win’ is an instant reliable seal. No issue of the pump hose twisting and releasing the air. The hose never ever pops off. There’s no time spent screwing the hose onto the tyre, and the biggest problem as mentioned above is when you twist off and end up unscrewing the valve core (on the inner you didn’t even know had a removable valve core). It does nothing that countless other hose ends don’t do, but it does it better than every other hose end.
Think of it as a really nice red wine. Unjustifiable to most, and the averge lay person who hardly drinks wine may not be able to tell the difference. But pump up enough tyres on enough other pumps and you’ll be able to fully appreciate just how pleasant the hiro is.
@josh - I mean feel free to chime in here, or at least invite us to the Silca salesteam staff xmas do
