Tips for recurring blisters?

I tried a few searches here but they didn’t turn up anything so don’t hate.

I have a blister on my right foot. Nothing juicy, just a little blister that I pop and it comes back. And comes back, and comes back. It’s not painful so I hardly notice it.
At first I thought perhaps it’s a sign I need new shoes. I’ve since got new shoes, but it’s still here. I’m not sure it’s ever really healed so the new shoes may not of had a chance to help yet. Any advice? Thx in advance for any non-snarky comments.

Try new socks.

I did some UA running socks. Not sure I’ve ran in them much yet.

How long does it take a popped blister to heal? Would using a lube in that spot help while it heals?

Were your new shoes the same shoe, just new? Or did you try switching brands? I started getting blisters on my arches from Asics…switched to Brooks and have been blister-free.

Here’s a “tip”. Let it recur. It will callous, and you will be one step closer to where you want to be.

Whether you need new shoes, socks, running form, etc depends on where on the foot the blister is -but to answer your question I have two suggestions.

For sockless runs - body glide or try-slide on the shoes *and *feet is something that has worked for me

To care for the blister - zinc - I use baby butt cream (yes I said it!) brand is not important but most people will recognize Desitin (sp?). A thin layer over the blister, then cover the blister. The zinc dries the blister and hardens it - may form a callous sooner (?), but I find it helpful.

This is all n=1, but I have talked to a lot of ultra and relay guy/gals who use it too.

Good luck!

Doesnt the bodyglide make your feet slippery?

Use sportslick or the like before running on the area that blisters to reduce the friction and prevent the blister.

Read "Fixing Your Feet: Prevention and Treatments for Athletes "

It is pretty comprehensive on foot care and blister prevention.

Bodyglide creates more of a sticky layer for me. Of course, I’m using it in other regions that chaff a lot without.

Where is the blister? If it’s on your toe, you may need a larger shoe or maybe just to tighten the laces. If it’s on your heel you may need a shoe that fits more securely in the heel.

If you are going Sock-less use Skin Sake! It stays on longest and works much better than Body Glide.

Thanks for all the tips! I’ll try them all. I alternate between Newton distance S and Brooks pure cadence. Both have been replaced with the same except I went Brooks pure flow this round. The blister is right below big toe pad. The blister touches the edge of the callous there and runs quite deep.

You might want to read Slowman’s discussion of an Asics shoe (3000?). In the products section I think, from a few years back.

“Fixing Your Feet” is a good book on this subject - maybe tmi, basically blisters form in presence of heat, friction and moisture- reduce or eliminate any of these factors and chances of blisters reduced. For me, a combo of wool socks (like thin smartwool) and desitin works. I use diaper rash cream on my feet and butt and works well

I used to have hell with blisters on my toes. Once I switched to toe socks I haven’t had a one. So, if it’s toes. try that.

back in the day (when i was into mountaineering) a good fix was to cover the popped blister with duct tape. the slippery outside stops the chaffing (to let it heal while you run with your new shoes, thus determining if its the socks or shoes.) hope this helps.

Blistershild works wonders for me

I only blister in races (I assume from wet feet), but this stuff has solved that major problem for me.

FishHog

a lubricant

(bodyglide or vaseline…)
.

Bodyglide and/or a bandaid. The tough strips work best, they stay on like grim death, even wet.

+1 to getting Fixing Your Feet, just a good thing to have around as a reference.

Here, I did the search for ya:
