Tips for learning to skateboard

Got a skateboard for kiddo. We both need to learn to ride it as well as doggo.

What tips do you have?

Are you just riding around to walk the dog or doing tricks? Street skating? vert ramps?

If you want to learn to push (using your foot to propel yourself forward), I found that tightening up my trucks a lot helped me feel more balanced and avoided wheel bite if I leaned too far.

If your kid is gonna learn tricks, get a real skateboard helmet and some 187 Killer Pads, especially the wrist guards. My kids are pretty good at ramps, but have eaten shit more times than I can count and I’m pretty certain we’d have been in the ER if it weren’t for those helmets and pads.

Invent a time machine and go back to when you were about 10 years old. Have fun.

It’s a longboard- just for cruising the neighborhood.

This, unless you have good ER insurance.

Figure out if you’re regular or goofy

And easy, but not 100% accurate, way is to stand with both feet together, and have someone give you a gentle push from behind; whichever foot you step with to regain your balance is your dominant foot, and that would go to the front

I’m goofy, myself - as is Tony Hawk

If you’re north of 45 years old, stay off the damn thing.

I grew up riding, didn’t ride for 20+ years, thought I could teach my son to ride. Nope. He learned more just watching others and probably youtube. I only learned gravity works.

Keep the rubber side down.

You should have posted this a while back. Got my son a skateboard for Christmas. Figured I could pick up where I left off. How hard can it be? Just like riding a bike.

Then I wiped out going down a gentle slope as the thing got going too fast for my ancient ass.

So true. One of our attorneys thought he’d show his son how to ride it. I ended up in the ER and later, shoulder surgery.

Sweet! I got 6 months left to learn!!!

We bought a long board one year ago. I didn’t have any major wipeouts, and I had fun doing it. Probably need to pick it back up now that weather is nice.

We are luck in that our street is a pretty gentle downhill, so we’re able to carve that up a bit without much risk of danger. We just used youTube and were able to find what we needed pretty easily.
