Tiny metal splinter in hand... how to get it out?

So I was working on getting my daughters bike ready for her first tri. In the process I got a little metal splinter in my hand. Couldn’t get it out. I figured it would abysses and come out on its own. Nope, it has worked itself down deeper into the muscle in my hand. WTF?

Exacto knife and some surgical tweezers… And detol…
And a band aid…
Happy hunting…

have you tried a drawing salve? http://www.walmart.com/ip/Smile-s-Homeopathic-Drawing-Salve-Prid-18-G/12167279

my hubby finds it to work.

As an auto tech I have this problem more often than I’d care for. When they are so deep you cant see them you really only have 1 option… and it’s not that fun… razor blade. I take a lighter to mine, then put rubbing alcohol on the affected area. Then I try and cut in right in the spot where the metal is. Then take tweezers and pry it out. Sometimes I pick at it with the corner of the razor blade. Fun stuff  good luck. This sounds worse than it is. It is better than leaving it in there and dealing with the feeling it makes when the pieces is brushed one direction or another. I can’t stand that! You will feel like a surgeon when you get it out.

I’m following this closely to see how you get it out. I’ve had a wooden "splinter’ a half inch long deep in my palm for a year and a half now. For some reason I think it will eventually work its way closer to the surface but so far it hasn’t.

I had a wooden splinter in my hand a few years back which wouldn’t come out on its own or with needles/tweezers. I ended up going to a doctor who referred me to a specialist. It ended up requiring a surgical procedure, but it was back to normal within a short time. He explained to me that the splinter formed a protective bubble (not the medical term for it) around it as a natural defense. Usually that is what forces it out, but in this case it just stayed in there. He simply cut the bubble out. While it may be a last resort, this may be an option. It may be worth checking in with a doctor, even though something like a splinter may not seem like something extreme.

I’ve removed many dozens of these using a sewing needle or T-pin to first find the offending piece and then do the surgery. I stroke the needle across the suspect area holding it nearly parallel to the skin surface until I feel the foreign object and then start “mining” at the site where the object can be felt. Generally every time the object is touched there is more sensation/pain and eventually I can uncover enough of the piece to either flick it out or grab it with good tweezers. Bactine is my antiseptic of choice but that’s because I like its smell.

Good luck,

Hugh

Had glass in my hand for 4-5 years. Dr said it was too close to tendons to try and cut out. One day it just “popped” right out. Smooth as a ball from all that time inside my skin i guess

. No fun- just power through it. I used to build decks and excavated a lot of saltreated and aluminum splinters this way.
Good luck,

Hugh

A couple of years ago I had a metal splinter, I got when in I was in high school, just pop out one day. It was in there 30 years.

One of the only things I can think of my body did good for me getting older.

Dig away. Or pay someone to dig it out for you.

Hello woof and All,

If the splinter is magnetic maybe a couple of cycles in an MRI or another super magnet.

Otherwise I have had good luck with the aforementioned needle and tweezers method and some alcohol.

I’ve dug in with nail clippers to get things out of my skin.

Luckily I have a microscope and several really good tweezers too.

+1 from an Ironworker.

I’m sure we could swap many home surgery stories.

Thank you guys.

One of my favorites wasn’t a intentional home surgery… but it does involve a blade. Had a roll of duct tape sitting on my toolbox in the hot sun. Grabbed the roll and put my hand through it and pulled off a nice long section. Immediately I knew something was wrong. There was a razor blade stuck to the roll of duct tape and it sliced all the way around my hand. I check every roll of tape now and dispose of razor blades after every use haha
