Tinsel Triathlon Race Report

PRE-RACE
Well, if there were ever a more last-minute decision to race, I’d like to know about it. I was toiling over spending the money and time to do the Tinsel Tri. I’ve already spent enough $$ racing/traveling this year and figured I’d pass, but…I did sell a few things on eBay (rationalizing). Anyway, the night before, I decided that with the solid surf we have right now, I’d get up in the morning, throw everything in the car- surfboard, bodyboard, tri bike, etc. and check the surf at 6am. If it was no good, I’d do the tri. Well, we had a front push through last night and the onshore wind was howling, so the decision was easy. I drove the 70 miles over to Hemet. I made a few wrong turns, but eventually found the school. Thought I’d remember from last year, but no.
Remembering the crowds of last year, I racked first, and THEN registered. I was scrambling a little as I had arrived a little late and had to run back to the car to get my goggles, run to the bathroom…whoops, forgot my t-shirt…stand in line for that, etc. Finally, race time.

THE RUN
This is a reverse tri with the swim last. I had warmed up a bit by running to my car and back…probably 1/4 mile and felt warmed up. I had forgotten my race belt, so I pinned my number on a loose-fitting shirt and pulled that over my long-sleeve jersey so I could whip it off quickly in T1. The RD was making announcements, but no one would shut up, so I couldn’t hear anything. Anyway, the race starts, and I’m off and running. I’ve been having a recurrence of pain where I SFX’ed my foot last year. I probably shouldn’t have been running as a result, but hey, it was only 5K. I had seeded in the front 1/3 of the pack not really knowing how fast I would be in comparison, but it worked out and I held together about a 7:50 pace or so. Problem was, the first 1.5 miles, my ankles were hurting like they were stiff! Granted, I did a 30/3 brick yesterday, but I’m not used to having to go hard on the run as I don’t usually race sprint distance, so I didn’t work into my pace. I have never had that pain in the ankles before and it sucked, but I just pressed on. By mile 2, I was better, and ramped it up. I passed a fair amount of people that were obviously losing steam having gone out too fast. Probably about 500 people in the race…a bit less than 2005 I think, maybe because it was a bit chilly. The guy dressed in the Spiderman costume was holding down a solid 3rd on the run! Go Spidey!
My run time about 24 and change.

T1
Off with the running shoes, hat and loose shirt, on helmet and bike shoes. I was wearing gloves too.

BIKE
This is a great 12-mile (actually 11.5 on my computer) bike course. Wide open, flat, fast…just one small rise at an overpass. We had a steady headwind for the out portion…about 5.5 miles, but I pushed hard intent on spending everything on the bike. I held about 20-21 mph for that stretch knowing I’d have the help of a tailwind coming back. The leader was a good 3 minutes ahead of 2nd place Russ Jones, the sprint distance legend at 51 years old! The following pack was pretty spread out. The RD had mentioned drafting before the race urging people to just “give some space”. BTW, he also said iPods were okay for the run only. This was not a USAT-sanctioned race. I honestly didn’t seen any drafting this year!
So, at the turnaround, I started hammering home and was a bit astonished to hold 27.5-28.5mph nearly the entire way back. Damn, I was loving the tail wind, but secretely telling myself I was a bike stud! Ha, ha. I was passing alot of folks on the bike, who obviously all run alot faster than me! I started thinking I might have a shot at the podium! I was 13th in my AG last year, but I was having a good bike ride here. (turns out I was wrong, but I didn’t know that!). Bike time was about 32 minutes. So, I hammered with everything I had all the way to the dismount line, and then had a brain fart and went to the wrong rack.

T2
I had to take a minute to get my bearings and find my rack, losing some time there. I couldn’t believe I did that! I came in through a different place than I exited (of course) and it screwed me all up. What a dumbass I am!

SWIM
Anyway, off with everything except my shorts and I grabbed my goggles and sprinted past a few on the way to the pool that looked like they might be in my AG. I was hell-bent on that elusive podium spot, even with the brain fart at T2.
This year, they added another 50-meter lap to the swim, so I jumped in (no diving allowed) and started thrashing. I was out of breath from the sprint to the pool, but got my composure and mowed down a few swimmers (I passed them…I didn’t dunk them!), and exited the pool not knowing how I did, but a glance at my watch about 1:30 after I finished indicated my time was about the same as last year which was just under an hour.

FINISH
I was a bit bummed as I thought I would CRUSH last year’s time, but I think my very average run was the deciding factor. Anyway, I ended up 10th in my AG, but times weren’t posted yet, so I don’t know if my hiccup in T2 made a difference in my placing or not.
The Tinsel Tri is a novelty! Not many places in this country that you can do an outdoor tri 2 weeks before Christmas. The vibe is decidedly casual and fun with alot of folks running/riding in costumes, and many first-timers, mountain bikers, people just racing as if they were out for a pleasurable jog and bike ride (ie, taking their time) so that makes it really fun for me. I like the variety in competitors that do this race. And then of course there are some that are competitive (like me). Don’t expect a massive post-race feed, aid stations everywhere, security in Transition, but do expect a good time for only $45! Can’t beat that! Now, I’m officially done for 2006! Next race? IM 70.3 Oceanside!

“but got my composure and mowed down a few swimmers (I passed them…I didn’t dunk them!)”

HAHA, I bet you were the one that mowed me down!
Good Job! You must’ve been right by me, as I finished 13th in my age group and my time was 59:54. Beat the 1 hour goal that I made for myself! Tinsel Tri was a great race with good vibes. Definitely going next year too.

Nice race report, TBBoarder! If it’s any consolation, I was four minutes slower than last year…and I thought I was in better shape and faster. Russ Jones took my AG, I was 11th.

Markus Mucous, aka Spiderman, took 4th overall. He told me he was passed in the last 5 meters in the pool.

Thanks for letting me know the swim was 50 meters longer than last year. That explains part of the slower time.

It was definitely windier than last year, also cooler. Last year: line for outdoor showers. This year, sprint to get warmed up and changed!

48 degrees at the start, 60 or so at the finish. Definitely comfortable and we won’t get any sympathy for the weather today.

Mark

That was Markus Mukus? Damn! I could yelled out “ST” to him as he blasted by!

Actually, if by “Markus Mukus” you mean the guy by that screen name, it was not him. If you meant “Marcus Mucous”, referring to me and an elementary-school nickname of mine, yep, that was me…spiderman.

The race was awesome…I met my goal of beating Santa Claus (Conrad, LA Tri Club), because Spidy just can’t lose to 'ol Saint Nick! I used to race against Kyle Hughes (the guy who won overall) back at the LA Tri Series races in 2001, 2002, before I was doing a bunch of collegiate stuff. He was definitely fast today (no surprise there) and dropped me on the run after the first mile and he put time on everyone from there. Got passed by the Jamba Juice guy (who took 2nd overall) on the bike, and by 3rd overall with about 10 meters left in the pool. The Spidy outfit was just one huge drag suit and I couldn’t hold him off! Should have used my web to hold him back a little, but with great power comes great responsibility…and I couldn’t bring myself to do it! =)

It will be a memborable race for me because I just got my Master’s degree and this was my last race in the collegiate division snif!

Great job everyone!

As always good race report. Stacy and I were thinking about doing the race but we pussed out. Sounds like you guys had fun… maybe next year. By the way we watched IMFL today and they showed the last few people finishing. We think we spotted you in the crowd along the finish line. Were you there the last hour?

Jay, Marcus, et al. It was my first trip there and I had a ton of fun. 52:25, 1st AG (35-39), and 6th overall. I can’t belive I couldn’t close the gap on Spidy on the second half of the bike!!! They’re talking of adding chip timing next year - I think they should leave it loose, but with 1000 participants this year perhaps it’s growing too much for the back-of-a-tail-gate kind a race.

Ian

Tinsel Triathlon was awesome. I experienced something nobody should have to go through. I got my first flat on the bike in a race. I didn’t have any tools or anything. Thankfully a couple of people helped me, (after running for a little, this woman gave me a CO2 cartridge, but tire held air for about 200 yards) then this nice gentleman gave me 2 CO2 cartridges, his adapter, and a spare tube. Well, being nervous, I put the adaptor in and I accidentally broke the top of the presta valve off, so that screwed things up a little. Finally, about a mile from the finish, a guy I know (actually my dentist) Jim Yanoschick (spelling?) helped me out and put a new tube in). Still a fun day. I have these 2 friends in Fallbrook who don’t do triathlons, but their parents make them do the Tinsel Tri every year. Every year they sprint the first 100 yards leading the run just as a joke. But they couldn’t make it this year, so I took it out with Toth and Hughes just as a joke to honor the yearly tradition. Sorry Marcus I saw you before the race, but not afterwards. So some questions, we registered for usa cycling, because we are going to do a cycling club too, and have triathlon like as a branch of the cycling club. Also, what do you guys do for scheduled workouts and rides and stuff? One more thing, what do you do for like extracurricular activities to keep club members interested?

Ahhh…a different Marcus Mucous! You were raging on the bike and run! The Spidey suit seemed to work well on the bike! Loved your comments! You are a true superhero!

Ha, ha. Yes, I was right at the finish line for the last hour at IMFL wearing a black fleece jacket hanging over the railing there cheering people on! What a blast that was! Can’t wait to do it again!
You and Stacy have to come out for Tinsel next year. It’s a great time!

Way to go Ian! You were stomping it! That return 6 miles on the bike was blazing fast with the tailwind!

Kyle’s father is in my AG (55-59) and he’s also very fast. Obviously the genes got passed down.

I missed the '04 and '05 races and was surprised to find out that It had grown form 150 to 500 participants. It was a neat race but I kind of miss the smaller crowd and the pancake breakfast. Still it was good to see some familiar faces like Gary Mc(Murtey) Alan Carlisle from the Inland Inferno and some others that race out that way.

Good job everyone. Maybe next year we can have a quick get together.

Hey Marcus, great job out there. You had the mask on when we first saw you and wondered if you’d keep it on or not. When you went by us on the return trip on the bike I figured for sure third was in the bag for you. You were really moving! This was the first time at the Tinsel race for my son and me, good way to finish off the season. We picked this one because the 12 year old son of a friend of ours had watched us do three races this year and wanted to give it a try. The course was perfect for a beginner for sure. We stayed with him the whole time and he really struggled on the bike because the rear shifter quit on him barely into the ride. Very cold on the bike, so the pool felt great until we had to get out and run over to transition again to get our towels. I think this is one we’ll put on our list for a repeat. Oh by the way, I don’t think the Trojans will think of the game as a walk over next year!
Congratulations on finishing your studies, too.
Neil

Looks like you got dumped down to 11th. Good race, sorry I couldn’t make it.

LINK TO RESULTS

Damnit! I have to lay off the Zingers!

And sadly it was by 5 seconds. I guess the rack issue is what did it! How were the conditions, were the roads slick after the rain?

Larry, Good to see you at Tinsel.

The Tinsel Tri is a sort of mock smackdown race for me and one of my racing buddies. We are pretty evenly matched, but his run speed always gets me at run first races. This year he was hit by a car at the Lake Arrowhead Tri and Tinsel was his first race back. The trash talk continued even though Mark did get to train much and was actually fighting off a cold on Sunday. Even though it wasn’t a fair fight, I went all out and beat my friend by a couple of minutes. I now have Tinsel Tri bragging rights for all of 2007.

This race has gotten big because it is a lot of fun and the vibe is great. Perfect for first timers and extremely competitive at the front end. The awards are some of the biggest I’ve ever seen at any race. This is a must do tri for anyone a tank of gas or less away from Hemet, Ca.

Damn! I can’t get that page to display! It keeps timing out, so I can’t see the results! 5 seconds out of 10th? Faaarrrrk! I’m trying to find out how many places I lost with the T2 snafu. I seriously wasted at least 30 seconds and if I lost more than one place, this will ruin my Christmas! Okay, I’m joking, but I’ll be FIRED UP for the 70.3 in March to redeem myself for that little mistake. This is the kind of stuff that motivates me!
Can you paste the results from my AG please?

Awesome that the little guy made it! I went jogging along the course after I finished and may have seen you guys. That headwind was brutal for everyone!

And yeah, I couldn’t believe so many U$C people were at the race…and willing to actually wear their U$C gear.

A message from your friendly neighborhood spiderman.
